The Interlake-Eastern RHA, with our community partners, are announcing our 5th annual Healthy Living – The Power of Prevention Conference on May 28 at the Lakeview Resort & Conference Centre in Gimli. 

Who Should Attend? Professionals in health, recreation, community development, education & municipal government. 

This Year's Theme: Our modern world brings opportunities & challenges to living healthy, productive & rewarding lives. How can individuals, leaders, staff & volunteers in community, recreation, health, & education use new approaches to wellness based on positive values? How do the basics of play, nutrition, physical activity, recreation, mindfulness, physical literacy, our built environment & technology fit into all this?

Early bird cost including dinner is $75.00. After May 9, cost is $100.00.

Please dress casually & wear appropriate footwear for physical activity breaks.

Drew Kozub is returning as MC of the conference.

Drew went to Riverton Early Middle Years School, graduated from Riverton Collegiate & played gigs on his violin next to his accordion-playing granny since age 5. Drew, Remote Host of Breakfast Television, has something to say about hard work & living your passions.

Tim Hague Sr.

 

 

Tim Hague Sr. is a registered nurse working at St. Boniface General Hospital as the manager of patient flow & transition. With 20 years of nursing experience, Tim can speak from a wealth of life experience in overcoming difficulties. Join the winner of Amazing Race Canada as he describes in witty detail his journey...all while dealing with young onset Parkinson's.

Paul LaPolice

Paul LaPolice knows about leadership & building teams. With over 20 years coaching experience, time spent as CFL head coach & assistant, & presently as a member of the CFL on TSN, he has had continued success bringing out the best in people. As head coach of the Blue Bombers, Paul led them to one of the biggest turnarounds in CFL history. He will be closing the conference with a keynote presentation, "The Name on Front of the Jersey is More Important than the Name on the Back".

  • 1A - Dream Big - Hear about Fiona's journey to the podium & becoming an Olympian & a medalist. Fiona will discuss the tremendous amount of commitment, dedication & perseverance to get to the top. Instructor: Fiona Smith-Bell
  • 1B - Master Chef of the Household - You don't have to be a Master Chef to make fantastic quick meals for your family. We'll show you how - and bring your app(etite). Instructors: Caroline Le Clair & Kristen Ticknor
  • 1C - Give Yourself a Mindful Break - NOTE: SESSION FULL! Take some time out of your day to relax and refresh with mindfulness based exercises.  This session will use a combination of breath work, guided meditation and gentle movement. Instructor: Orysia Klymkiw
  • 1D - Walk This Way - Connecting People to Recreation- Develop an understanding of the role that public recreation plays in connecting & facilitating access to recreation. This session is for anyone interested in community development, part of municipal government & community organizations, or working in recreation. Instructors: Dave Cain & Roger Langlais

  • 2A - If You Don't Look After Your Body, Where Are You Going to Live? - NOTE: SESSION FULL! - Wellness is more than NOT being sick. Learn strategies & tactics to live more healthfully. This presentation is full of ideas & strategies with "take-home" value. Instructor: Dave Bosiak
  • 2B - Fad Diets - Some popular fad diets & supplements will be examined along with recommendations on healthy weight loss. Instructor: Jillian Paulmark
  • 2C - Internet Safety - Cyber Bullying - What to share & what not to share online.  What can I lose? What can I do to protect myself? What can the police do for me if someone is threatening me? I sent some bad photos of myself over the internet...where can I go for help? Learn the security dangers of the internet with Instructor: Constable Paul Human
  • 2D - Fit Kids Healthy Kids - The goal of this program is to help promote the teaching of fundamentals of movement to children in Manitoba. Fit Kids Healthy Kids will provide training, have easy to follow resources & supply equipment to programs interested in developing these fundamentals in the children they work with. Instructor: Michelle Johnson

The Interlake-Eastern Health Promotion Working Group recognizes groups/projects that are contributing to Connecting People and Communities to Excellent Health Services - Today & Tomorrow. Besides recognizing the people who put the program in place, this award recognizes excellence in health promotion.
