Durango Mountain Camp, Rocky Mountain Branch of the IDA, and Durango School District 9-R are again sponsoring a Conference on Dyslexia, Diamonds-in-the-Rough, Friday and Saturday, March 15-16, 2013, at the beautiful Sky-Ute Casino near Durango, Colorado.

 

Workshops feature experts in Multi-Sensory Math, Writing Skills, Tapping the Magic of your Mind, Executive Functions, an Overview of Dyslexia, and Technology.

Joyce Bilgrave, M.Ed. Fellow: Orton-Gillingham Academy, Executive Director Durango Mountain Camp and Rocky Mountain Camp. Ms. Bilgrave’s four decades of academic and camp experience span the United States. She is cofounder and former Head of the Jemicy School. She was the founder of The Rawson Saunders School and The Liberty School for dyslexic and gifted children.

 Cheryl Chase, Ph.D. is a clinical Psychologist, Cleveland, Ohio. This workshop will define the term “executive functioning” using clear, easy to understand terms. It will also draw the connection between executive functioning and academics, highlighting the ways in which executive dysfunction can negatively impact learning and performance. Finally, many concrete strategies will be provided that can be used to support a student with weak executive functioning.

Jim Sandstrum

James Sandstrum, MA, CCC-SLP  is a coordinator of Business Services for Assistive Technology Partners (ATP), Denver University. This session will explore the newest technologies available to support reading, writing and the general curriculum including several low or no cost options for speech recognition, document reading (printed pages), spelling supports and study skills. We will dig into mobile devices, iPads and other iOS based devices such as iPods and iPhones as tools to support reading, writing, note taking, study skills, organization, and research for students.

MJ Bilgrave

M.J. Bilgrav, BS Outdoor Education is a cofounder and codirector of Durango Mountain Camp for dyslexic students, and is certified by the Orton Gillingham Academy as an OG certified language therapist. M.J. has been teaching dyslexic students for the past 20 years. She is currently a faculty member of Grace Preparatory Academy of Durango where she teaches high school English and math. This workshop is designed to introduce parents, teachers, and administrators to the characteristics of dyslexia, the definition.

Chris Woodin Ed.M is the Math Department Chairman, Landmark School, Manchester, Massachusetts. Executive functioning, motor planning, and math-specific visual processing skills all play a role in acquiring math competency. Methods will be presented to help students express, relate, store, and retrieve information efficiently.  This session will provide students with a way to store, access, and express multiplication and division facts through multi modal activities that utilize visual and kinesthetic processing.
