Cal/OSHA's Confined Space Special Emphasis Initiative...What you need to know.

In February 2012, Cal/OSHA launched a statewide Confined Space Special Emphasis Initiative, to focus attention on preventing workers deaths and injuries in confined spaces at California worksites. Responding to California's seven confined space fatalities in 2011, Cal/OSHA's goal for this initiative is zero confined space fatalities.

Employers are required to have plans in place to identify confined spaces at their worksites. They should notify and train employees and ensure that onsite rescue plans are in place. These requirements include a written confined space plan, procedures to test the air quality inside the space, proper employee and supervisor training, and effective rescue procedures immediately available on-site. Common types of confined spaces include tanks, silos, pipelines, sewers, storage bins, storm drains, tunnels, and vaults.

•  Classification of Confined Spaces
•  Physical and Atmospheric Hazards
•  Duties of the Entrant, Attendant,  and Supervisor
•  Atmospheric Monitoring, Ventilation, PPE
•  and Rescue Requirements.

Presenter:  Peter Kuchinsky II, CSP, Sr. Risk Management Consultant and trainer for the Joint Powers Insurance Authority (JPIA) brings both actual field experience and educational knowledge.    He earned his degree in Public Administration from San Diego State University.  Among his certifications are Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Registered Environmental Assessor (REA I) and Safety Trained Supervisor (STS).
