There is significant evidence that elevated rates of substance abuse and reduced regional access to prevention services negatively impact the physical and mental health of those affected.  In order to prevent substance abuse and reduce behavioral health disparities among the youngest in our communities, SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) proposes that we must increase cultural competence in the areas of health care policy, practice, and education.  This presentation will help those working in prevention understand the need for cultural competence as well as outline SAMHSA’s approach to reduce behavioral health disparities and increase health equity among our youngest community members.

  • Gain an understanding of SAMHSA’s definitions related to health equity and cultural competence.
  • Understand how historical discrimination in a region contributes to exclusion and inequality.
  • Learn SAMHSA’s principles of cultural competence and gain strategies to give all families access to the same opportunities to increase health equity among our youngest community members.

Presenter: Nicolle Moore, MS, IMFT, is Coordinator of Mental Health in Early Childhood Child Focus, Inc.  She is responsible for a team of therapists and consultants working in Adams, Brown, Clermont, Hamilton, and Highland counties.  In addition she works as a Master trainer that is funded by the state of Ohio as part of the Whole Child Matters Grant and is responsible for consultation with all types of early learning programs.  She provides training for early learning professionals and parents in social/emotional development, challenging behaviors, early approaches to learning, and trauma informed approaches.  Ms. Moore has been working at Child Focus since 2008 and has over 13 years experience working with a variety of at risk youth in many community settings.
