Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics Training

The Nevada Hospital Engagement Network has partnered with the University of Nevada School of Medicine to offer the two-day Advanced Life Support in Obstetrics (ALSO) on April 17-18, 2014 from 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the United Healthcare offices in Las Vegas. The $495 fee and the $145 manual cost is waived so it is free for Nevada HEN Hospital participants.

For those outside the immediate Las Vegas area who may need hotel/travel due to the distance, scholarships may be available. Contact Dr. Palmer at ejpalmer@medicine.nevada.edu for more information.

Registration deadline is March 20, 2014.

This course offers staff/physicians training through classroom instruction, simulation of emergency situations, and evidence-based method for team communication and skills with a written and practical test. Successfully passing the test results in becoming a certified ALSO provider (5-year certificate).

ALSO helps physicians and other maternity health care providers develop and maintain the knowledge and skills they need to effectively manage potential emergencies during the perinatal period. Just a few of the areas covered include: prenatal risk assessment, first-trimester bleeding, preterm labor, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, fetal assessment, safety, maternal resuscitation, etc. Hands on workshops with mannequins and actual performance of simulated activities occurs. More general information about ALSO can be found at www.aafp.org/about/initiatives/also.html .

Class size is limited to 30 participants (Nevada only) so sign up today. Once you have registered, a manual will be shipped 3 to 4 weeks in advance for you to study for the course/test.  The course is approved for 14.75 CME's and 17.6 CEU's.

If interested in this training, fill in this form. Deadline is March 20, 2014.

More ALSO courses are being planned for northern Nevada and dates will be released soon. In addition, courses for Team STEPPS®: Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety are being planned.
