POSTPONED (originally October 2, 2013)
CLPHA, along with our partners from the PHA Sustainability Network, will host a briefing call during which HUD will present on how housing authorities can participate in, and benefit from, the Better Buildings Challenge. This initiative calls on U.S. companies, universities, school districts, multifamily organizations, and state and local government to take the Challenge and commit to reduce the energy used across their building portfolios by 20 percent or more over 10 years.
The Better Buildings Challenge supports participants by providing technical assistance and proven solutions to energy efficiency. The program also provides a forum for matching participants with financial institutions and utilities (“Allies”) to enhance collaboration and problem solving in energy efficiency. In addition, participants are publically recognized for their leadership and innovation in energy efficiency.
Expanding to Include the Multifamily Residential Sector
In 2013, the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have partnered to expand the Better Buildings Challenge to the multifamily residential sector. This expansion is part of President Obama's Climate Action Plan, which was announced in June and recognizes the role that increased efficiency can play in reducing energy use and carbon pollution. Through HUD, the Challenge will be open to leaders in market rate (unsubsidized) multifamily housing, public housing, Low-Income Housing Tax Credit properties, and HUD-assisted multifamily properties.
