About the Series:
This year’s 2016 LiveTalk Series will be focused on advances in our understanding of autism with an emphasis on how those advances influence the practice of occupational therapy using a sensory integration approach. We will be offering a wealth of knowledge from experts in the field on a variety of topics ranging from sensory integration intervention, early identification of sensory and motor problems in children with ASD, working with adults with ASD, and coordinating behavioral and sensory-based intervention programs among other topics.
This LiveTalk is part of the 2016 Series. Subscribers to the 2017 Series will need to purchase this LiveTalk in order to view it.
The etiology of sensory integration dysfunction is currently unknown. Differences in sensory processing are known to exist among varying populations but little is known about the cause of the differences. This program with internationally known researcher, Dr. Elysa Marco, will discuss her research on brain imaging in children with sensory processing disorder and as well as those with autism. This LiveTalk will highlight cutting edge findings on the neurostructural differences which may underlie or contribute to differences in sensory processing.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this LiveTalk the participant will be able to:
- Identify which neural microstructures are different in children with SPD compared to typical peers.
- Describe the relation between neural microstructure differences in children with SPD and different aspects of sensory processing.
- Describe similarities and differences in neural microstructures among children with SPD and children with ASD.
About the Speaker: Dr. Elysa Marco received her BA in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania and then obtained her MD at the University of California, San Francisco. She continued her residency training at UCSF in pediatrics, neurology, and child neurology. In addition, she completed a cognitive and behavioral fellowship with an emphasis on the genetics of cognitive impairment. She joined the faculty of UCSF in 2005 and is an active clinician, researcher, and educator.
