The Adult/Adolescent Sensory History is available now!

The culmination of years of research and work, the Adult/Adolescent Sensory History, is designed as a self-report assessment of sensory and motor behaviors commonly observed in individuals with difficulties processing and integrating sensory information. The purpose of this assessment is to help identify adults and adolescents ages 13 to 95 who experience problems in sensory processing and integration as well as assist therapists in clinical reasoning when creating interventions for these individuals. Based on the conceptual model of sensory processing and sensory integration proposed by A. Jean Ayres, this measure is designed to identify difficulties in five key areas of functioning: Sensory Discrimination, Sensory Modulation, Postural-Ocular Skills, Praxis, and Social-Emotional Functioning.

Essentials of Sensory Integration Assessment

A Two-Part Spiral Online Course

Part One: Clinical Assessment of Sensory Integration in Diverse Environments

Part Two: Assessment of Foundational Mechanisms and Praxis

Presented by:
Teresa May-Benson, ScD, OTR/L, FAOTA

This course will be available from:
Monday, March 5 to Monday, April 30, 2018

This course is Part Two of the five part Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration. Learn more about the program HERE.

Essentials of Sensory Integration Assessment, Part One: Clinical Assessment of Sensory Integration in Diverse Environments

This course, previously offered on its own, is now Part 1 of the Essentials of Sensory Integration Assessment. It is designed to teach therapists and other professionals how to observe and identify modulation and discrimination problems outside of the standardized sensory integration assessment. Every therapist will encounter situations where her tried and true standardized assessments are simply inappropriate. These situations are especially common when working with children with sensory integration concerns or those with autism, who may not tolerate the demands of standardized tests, or when working outside a traditional clinic, such as in the case of school-based and early intervention therapists and mental health practitioners. With the help of lecture, case studies, and video analysis participants will fine tune observations and enhance clinical reasoning skills that can be used in the classroom, the home, and other clinical settings.

If you completed the 'Clinical Assessment of Sensory Integration in Diverse Environments' online course when it was offered 2014 you DO NOT need to take it again. You will, however, need to complete the course exam, if you have not done so already, to receive credit towards completion of the Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration.

This course, in conjunction with Part 2 of Essentials of Sensory Integration Assessment, will provide participants with a solid foundation for clinical assessment of sensory integration difficulties in children. Parts 1 and 2 of the Essentials of Sensory Integration Assessment on-line courses are the equivalent of the 2-day live course.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  1. Identify ways to supplement standardized test results with observations of daily life activities.
  2. Recognize limitations of standardized test results when assessing the full range of sensory processing problems.
  3. Identify a framework to organize observations sensory problems in daily life activities.

Contact Hours: 7.0 contact hours, or .7 AOTA CEUs.

Essentials of Sensory Integration Assessment, Part Two: Assessment of Foundational Mechanisms and Praxis

This course, Part 2 of Essentials of Sensory Integration Assessment, will provide participants with a solid foundation for clinical assessment of foundational mechanisms of postural-ocular skills and respiration as well as praxis functions. Principles and clinical reasoning strategies for assessment of postural-ocular control, respiration and praxis difficulties related to sensory integration problems will be addressed.  Participants will learn how to administer an observation-based clinical assessment of functional visual skills, oculo-motor functioning, postural control and various aspects of praxis and will become familiar with Ayres’ Sensory Integration Clinical Observations. Participants will also learn how to organize and report assessment findings in the context of a sensory integration assessment.  Course format includes a combination of lecture, video analysis, and case studies.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the course participants will be able to:

  1. Identify a framework to organize observations of postural-respiratory, oculo-motor, and praxis problems.
  2. Describe key assessment tools and observations essential for identifying postural-ocular and praxis problems.
  3. Administer and interpret an observation-based clinical assessments of postural-ocular functions and praxis skills.
  4. Relate assessment findings to function, report writing and intervention planning.
