Supporting Parents of Children with Sensory Processing Challenges: In and Out of the Clinic

Presented by:
Erin R. Flynn, MS OTR/L

Thursday, March 28, 2019
12:00pm - 1:30pm EST

Webinars are online presentations geared towards professionals. Participants who call in live have the opportunity to participate in a question/answer session with the speaker. All registrants, regardless of live attendance, receive a download of the recorded webinar following the presentation.

Today’s parents are more actively engaged in their children’s lives than previous generations. The thousands of books on parenting and easy availability of Internet resources often overwhelm parents of children with sensory processing challenges. As occupational therapists our role is to direct parents to resources and information that will best support the family system as a whole and the work we do clinically. This webinar will discuss how to support the parent-child relationship with an emphasis on supporting parents.  It will explore the “when” and “how” to recommend mental health and parenting resources when parents need additional support.  Emphasis will be on supports for parents of children with emotional regulation difficulties. This webinar will also introduce the listener to several mental health intervention models that complement Ayres Sensory Integration® (ASI) intervention.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this webinar participants will be able to:

  1. Describe 3 ways to support parents during their child’s Occupational Therapy treatment.
  2. Identify 3 indicators that a client with sensory processing challenges and their caregivers would benefit from other support interventions in addition to occupational therapy
  3. Identify 3 mental health interventions/models that complement Ayres Sensory Integration® intervention and incorporate some tenants of ASI.
