Participants wishing to receive credit towards a certificate of completion for the Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration MUST complete the accompanying competency exam following the course.

Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration
The Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration (PECSI) will be returning for its second year starting in February 2017. The Spiral Foundation began offering this five course series in 2016 in response to the dissolution of the WPS/USC SI certification program. This five course program is designed to provide clinicians with a solid foundation of skills to understand, evaluate, and treat sensory integration difficulties. This program includes courses on sensory integration theory, clinical assessment, test administration, interpretation of patterns of sensory integration dysfunction and sensory integration intervention.
In the interest of convenience and accessibility participants have the option to take courses 1, 2, and 5 either live or online. Online courses are available as streamed videos that participants have free access to for the duration of the course. Courses 3 and 4, which address the administration and interpretation of the SIPT tests, must be attended in person.
Participants of both live and on-line formats will complete competency tests after each course segment to reinforce and assure learning of material. Participants who complete all five courses will receive a certificate of completion for the program.

This course is Part Two of the five part Program of Essential Competencies in Sensory Integration. Learn more about the program HERE.
This course will provide participants with a solid foundation for clinical assessment of sensory integration difficulties in children. Principles and clinical reasoning strategies for assessment of sensory integration problems will be addressed. Participants will learn how to administer an observation-based clinical assessment of sensory modulation and discrimination and how to interpret assessment findings in the context of sensory integration assessment. Clinical assessment of postural-ocular-respiratory functions and praxis skills will also be addressed. The course format, a combination of lecture, video, and case studies allows opportunities to address participants’ questions and concerns.
Learning Objectives
By the end of this course participants will be able to:
- Identify a framework to organize observations of sensory, postural-ocular and praxis problems.
- Describe key assessment tools and observations essential for identifying sensory modulation, sensory discrimination, postural-ocular and praxis problems.
- Administer and interpret an observation-based clinical assessments of sensory modulation and discrimination, postural-ocular functions and praxis skills.
- Relate assessment findings to fun, report writing and intervention planning.
About the Speaker: Teresa May-Benson is the Executive Director of the Spiral Foundation as well as a practicing occupational therapist at OTA The Koomar Center. She is active in conducting research related to sensory integration through the Spiral Foundation’s Sensory Processing Research Center and Laboratory. She is a well-known lecturer and researcher on sensory integration theory and intervention, has authored book chapters and articles on praxis and sensory integration, and completed her doctoral dissertation on ideational praxis. Dr. May-Benson received her bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University and her master’s degree from Boston University with a concentration in sensory integration and school system therapy. She was a Maternal and Child Health Fellow in the Doctoral Program in Therapeutic Studies at Boston University. She has received the Virginia Scardinia Award of Excellence from AOTA for her work in ideational praxis.
