Passing the Torch:

The Pros & Cons of Succession, Sale & ESOPs for Effective Business Continuation

Family businesses make up 2/3 of all businesses worldwide, creating  between 50% -80% of jobs. But according to a recent PwC survey, only 52% of them expect that members of the next generation can manage the business on their own. Succession of your business, whether it stays in the family, is put up for sale, or transitions to an ESOP, depends on what you’ve done to plan for success as well as succession.  Founders and owners will need the kinds of resources and support to identify and define a succession plan that aligns with your vision and intentions for the business. The right-fit plan will safeguard the successful continuation of the business. But where do you start? Is your next generation engaged and equipped to carry on the legacy? What are the legal, financial, cultural and emotional aspects of an ownership transition?

Join family business founders and owners from across Greater Philadelphia to hear thought leaders and practice experts from the Pennsylvania Center for Employee Ownership and The Initiative for Family Business & Entrepreneurship at Saint Joseph’s University, discuss best practices in succession planning, including definitions, case studies and a review of the benefits and challenges of transitioning to next-generation, employee stock ownership (ESOP) and sale to a third-party.

What you will learn:

  • The options for business continuation and their financial, legal and emotional considerations
  • The tell-tale signs to begin transitioning your business
  • The elements of a next-steps action plan

Plus, hear insights and lessons learned from some of Philadelphia’s most successful multi-generational family businesses!
