Campaign for Grade Level Reading: The Funder Action Series, Part 3

Summer Learning

Join us for the third webinar, of a four-part series, that will explore the Campaign for Grade Level Reading Initiative and its core community solution areas.  The third webinar will cover:

Community Solution Area: Summer Learning

Too many children lose ground over the summer months, returning to school in the fall further behind than when they left in June. Children in low-income families lack access to enriching summer learning experiences, have few if any books in the home and face increased food insecurity without school meals.

Participate in an interactive conversation about what the science says about summer learning loss and ways to solve this problem. Find out how funders in the New York State GLR Network are working with partners in their local communities to improve student outcomes on summer learning. Learn more about the most promising and proven practices, programs and policies that expand access to books and integrate literacy skills development over the summer months. The session will include innovative approaches and models of how to deliver and integrate both summer learning opportunities and summer meals.

New York Funders Alliance and Philanthropy New York’s Education Working Groups invite you to learn about the National and State Campaign for Grade Level Reading as a funding framework.

Explore issues such as:

  • What's working, what’s challenging and what’s next when it comes to closing the summer learning gap?
  • What are the key proof points of the Campaign?
  • How are funders playing a crucial role in the Campaign’s ongoing efforts nationally and locally?
  • What does the latest research say about summer slide and lack of access to nutritious meals on early school success?

Concrete examples of how funders are helping to reduce the summer slide and improve reading scores as a measure of success in school improvement.

The webinar series is:

An introduction to the Campaign for Grade Level Reading:

The Campaign is a collaborative effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, states and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on an important predictor of school success and high school graduation—grade-level reading by the end of third grade. Launched in 2012, the Campaign is an expanding Network of more than 200 national and international communities. The communities, including many in New York from Buffalo to New York City, are hard at work implementing ambitious plans to address three challenges to students’ reading success that are widespread, consequential and amenable to community solutions:

The Summer Slide: Too many children lose ground over the summer months.

The Readiness Gap: Too many children from low-income families begin school already far behind.

The Attendance Gap: Too many children from low-income families miss too many days of school.
