Principled Negotiation: What it is and why we should try it

The workshop will be an educational training opportunity to learn about and refine attendees’ negotiation skills.

The program will address negotiation skills applicable to:

  • Develop an effective plan and appropriate strategy for any negotiation  
  • Build confidence and credibility in asking for what you want
  •  Become more strategic in your professional and personal negotiation
  • Contracts, Interpersonal relationships, and Day to day work product

In this interactive workshop, participants will learn the basic approach to principled negotiation. Principled negotiation, developed at the Harvard Negotiation Project and detailed in the book Getting to Yes by Roger Fisher and William Ury, focuses on problem-solving, mutual gains and decisions based on the merits. It's a style of negotiation where people get what they're entitled to while still remaining decent.  1 CLE

About Our Workshop Leader

Gina Pruski is the Director of Training and Development for the State Public Defender’s Office (SPD) in Wisconsin. After obtaining both her undergraduate and law degrees from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she began her career with the SPD in 1992 serving first as a staff attorney in the Trial Division and then as Deputy Legal Counsel and Legislative Liaison for the agency.

Gina was the 2016-17 Chair of the National Alliance of Indigent Defense Educators (NAIDE), the trainers’ section of the National Legal Aid and Defender Association (NLADA) and is currently an executive officer of NAIDE. She is a member of the National Association of Public Defense (NAPD) and serves on NAPD’s Education Committee, the NAPD Academy Advisory Group and the NAPD Executive Leadership Institute Focus Group. She frequently conducts training for public defender trainers around the country.


In 2017 and 2018, Gina served as a trainer consultant for NLADA for the MacArthur Foundation’s Safety and Justice (S+J) Challenge. In addition, on behalf of the U.S. State Department, Gina provided mentoring and technical assistance in the area of training and professional development to the Public Defender’s Office in Armenia. In March 2018, she conducted train-the-trainer programs for criminal justice professionals in Yerevan.


She has received extensive training in the area of racial justice facilitation, is one of the YWCA of Madison’s Race to Equity facilitators and conducts workshops and presentations on the topic of unconscious bias for public defender offices around the country and, in 2016, the Criminal Lawyers’ Association in Canada. Other subjects for which she conducts training at the national level include poverty, cultural humility, public defender wellness and leadership.


She also serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin Youth Company, is co-author of the WISCONSIN JUVENILE LAW HANDBOOK published by the State Bar of Wisconsin and is faculty for the Skills Intensive Training of the Lawyering Skills Course at the UW Law School. She also regularly volunteers as a judge for moot court and mock trial competitions at the UW Law School.

Gina is a 2011 recipient of the Women in the Law honor bestowed by the Wisconsin Law Journal.
