AIACOC January Luncheon

Join us for the January AIA Luncheon on Thursday, January 26th 11:30 a.m. at The Station at Moore Central Park located at 700 South Broadway in Moore.  Our program will be Streetcars as Catalysts for Urban Development and Vitality.

The MAPS 3 Modern Streetcar, to be known as the Oklahoma City Streetcar or OKC Streetcar, will link important districts in and around downtown Oklahoma City. The OKC Streetcar will run on rails flush with street level.

  • Project budget: $131 million
  • Construction: Begins in 2017.
  • Storage & Maintenance Facility location: SW 7th Street and Hudson Avenue

Our speaker will be D.J. Baxter.  D.J.  is a Project Manager at Shiels Obletz Johnsen, where he is currently supporting public agency real estate and streetcar development projects across the country. From 2007 to 2016, D.J. served as the Executive Director of the Redevelopment Agency of Salt Lake City, where he oversaw the operations of Utah’s largest redevelopment agency. The RDA of Salt Lake City operates seven project areas, where tax increment revenues are reinvested in the community under the direction of the Mayor and Board of Directors. Under D.J.’s leadership, the RDA led Salt Lake City’s efforts to develop a 2500-seat theater for touring Broadway shows, construct a modern streetcar line to serve as a development catalyst, and stimulate redevelopment in all of its designated project areas through a variety of resources and programs. Prior to his appointment to the RDA Director’s position, D.J. served as the Senior Advisor to the Salt Lake City Mayor, as the Project Manager for Envision Utah, and as an Associate at Bear West, a private land use planning and consulting firm.  D.J. holds a law degree from the University of Utah, and focuses his work on urban design, development and public finance, and public transportation.

Plan to join us to learn more about what DJ Baxter can tell us about the MAPS 3 Modern Streetcar project as well as how these types of projects serve as catalysts for urban development and vitality.  Following DJ's talk, attendees are welcome to stay for a short tour of The Station, designed by TAP Architecture.

This program is free to AIA Central Oklahoma Members.  (Allied member add-ons are $20).  Guests are $25 and AIAS Students are $10.  The deadline to register is Friday, January 20.
