Driving Directions

Camas National Wildlife Refuge headquarters can be accessed from Interstate 15 via Exit 150 to the town of Hamer, Idaho. From Hamer, turn to the north on Old Butte Highway and travel approximately three miles to get to an overpass and county road 2350 N. The Refuge headquarters is approximately two miles west of the I15 overpass. The workshop will take place in the building just south of the parking lot and restroom.

Intended Audience

This is a family-friendly, citizen science event and we encourage parents and children to attend.

Additional Information
There is no cost for the workshop, however, pre-registration is required and space is limited to 35 participants.

Registered participants will receive Xerces Society's Monarch Conservation publications.

Lunch will not be provided; please bring a bagged lunch and water to the course. Snacks and other beverages will be provided.

PLEASE JOIN THE XERCES SOCIETY AND THE U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE FOR THIS HANDS-ON, FAMILY-FRIENDLY TRAINING ON WHAT STEPS YOU CAN TAKE TO HELP CONSERVE MONARCH BUTTERFLIES

Bring the family and join us in learning how you can help conserve monarch butterflies and their habitat

OBJECTIVES
  • Learn about the monarch life cycle
  • Learn what monarchs need and how to identify milkweed species, native nectar plants, and what else makes good monarch habitat
  • Learn how to create a garden and support monarchs
  • Learn how to participate in citizen science projects

ACTIVITIES

  • Presentations by monarch researchers on monarch conservation and science
  • Get out in the field and find monarchs and milkweed! 
  • Participate in citizen science projects   
  • Activities and treasure hunt event for kids 

INSTRUCTOR

Stephanie McKnight, Conservation Biologist, The Xerces Society
Stephanie is a Conservation Biologist with the Xerces Society whose work focuses on the conservation of the Western population of monarch butterflies. She has a Bachelor's degree in Botany and has experience working on the conservation of rare species of butterflies and plants.
