We want a movement guided by certified trainers who have a strong foundational knowledge of poverty and its impacts on children and families and who are grounded with a solid ability to assist in creating paradigm shifts and systemic change.

At the GoldStar Speaker Institute, participants will gain the skills for training and coaching individuals and organizations to ensure inclusive, responsive systems to truly make a difference for those living in the crisis of poverty.

Once you are a Certified GoldStar Speaker:
You may charge for speaking and training using CAB materials. GoldStar speakers keep 2/3 of any speaker fees (agreeing to pay 1/3 of speaker's fees to CAB). By contributing a small portion of your speakers fees, you will be joining CAB’s movement for a contemporary war on poverty. GoldStar Speakers also have options to purchase CAB materials at reduced rates to provide and/or sell to their audience.

Prework for becoming a Beegle GoldStar Speaker:

Complete the Following Readings:

• Read See Poverty...Be the Difference (if you have not already done so)
• Beegle Dissertation (provided electronically)
• How to Deliver a TED Talk: Secrets of the World's Most Inspiring Presentations by Jeremey Donavan.
• Interpersonal Communication: Relating to Others (7th edition, 2013) by Steven Beebe, Susan Beebe, and Mark Redmond.
• Nickle and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehreinrich.
• Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire.
• The War Against the Poor: The Underclass and Antipoverty Policy by Herbert Gans.

Complete the Following Assignment (Focus Groups and Report):

1. Conduct a minimum of two focus groups (four to six people in each focus group). Dr. Beegle will provide sample focus group questions for you to choose from or to help you formulate your own. Invite stakeholders from your area of expertise or the area that you want to focus on. These groups should represent any of these type of stakeholders:
   
   • Students at Title I schools
   • Students receiving Pell Grants
   • Single parents on welfare or receiving food stamps
   • People in justice system (juvenile or adult)
   • Seniors or adults receiving Medicaid
   • Other target groups living in poverty, specifically for your area of expertise
2. Write a 3-5 page paper on an area covered in the dissertation (ie retention, first generational college students, social class in America etc.) using a minimum of four current sources to support your thesis/claims. Incorporate findings from your focus group interviews into this paper.
