9AM-12:00 Veteran Strikers’ Panel - The 1968 BSU-TWLF Strike and What It Means Today 

Description:  Following a 20-minute viewing of video produced during the Strike, veterans of the historic BSU-TWLF strike will discuss the transformation of the NSA into the BSU by Civil Rights Movement activists, pre-Strike efforts to recruit disadvantaged students of color and develop Black  Studies  and other relevant education, the emergence of the TWLF coalition (LASO, MASC, ICSA, PACE and AAPA), overview of the strike itself, the related strike by the AFT faculty union,  post-Strike firing of Black Studies and AFT faculty strikers, and the continuing need to  struggle for relevant education that addresses community needs.

1:00-2:15 Panel: Intergenerational dialogue between Veterans, Students and Faculty

Description: Strike Veterans view the struggle for equity in education as continuing; current students and faculty share their perspectives and struggles in a dialogue about contemporary issues facing Third World studies, and education more broadly; identify which lessons of the past are applicable in today's political atmosphere; and how vets can be contributing, responsible, supporting elders.

2:15-3:30 Panel: Third World Women Strikers

Description: Third World women representatives of the TWLF Coalition of organizations which initiated, conceptualized, implemented, and negotiated the strike and its aftermath were the engine of the movement which birthed the College of Ethnic Studies. Panelists will discuss their experiences during that tumultuous period of time. Although the “Face” of the strike leadership was primarily male, women strikers were among the strategists, writers, negotiators, facilitators, and providers of invaluable support behind the scenes. Present on picket lines and sit-ins, women were also arrested for demonstrating their commitment and belief in needed changes in the system of higher education. The panelists will describe their roles, conflicts regarding the risks of participation, positive and negative experiences during the strike, and its impact on their lives.

3:45-5:00 Panel: Perspectives/Reflections on the Legacy of the BSU/TWLF Strike. Viewing of excerpts of the film Agents of Change.

Description:  Excerpts from the film Agents of Change will be followed by a conversation from three perspectives by strike participants from SF State and U.C. Berkeley.

Moderator: Juanita Tamayo Lott, Strike Veteran and retired demographer, federal statistical system. Will provide a brief introduction to her new book, Golden Children:  The Legacy of Ethnic Studies, SF State to set the context for panelists’ discussion.

10:00-11:30 Panel: The Impact of the 1968 BSU/TWLF Strike and Ethnic Studies on the 2016 Bataan Legacy Curriculum

Description:  Educators and/or alumni of ethnic studies at SF State and other universities discuss how the strike and related social movements, including the concurrent Delano farm workers' grape strike, inspired and informed their ability to successfully lobby the California Department of Education to include the World War II Bataan Legacy in 11th grade social science and history curriculum and then create and implement the curriculum.

Description:  Ethnic studies alumni from SF State and other universities discuss how these higher education innovations influenced and inspired their commitment to bringing the importance of social movements, social justice, the BSU/TWLF strike, and ethnic studies to secondary schools.
