MALA 2014 Young Adult Workshop

Let's Hook Up: Teens and Libraries

This year the overall theme for the MALA Young Adult workshop will revolve around getting our teens to be lifelong library lovers, including the phases of initial attraction, 1st & 2nd "dates", and commitment. We expect to address promotion, outreach, programs, technology, and collections primarily through table talks and interactive sessions.

Agenda:

9-10am   TED - Talks provoking discussion about the future of library services for teens

10-11am  Table Talks - 3 presenters will facilitate for 20 minutes each (attendees will rotate through) on topics related to "initial attraction" or how to get teens interested in your library.

11am-12pm Book Snacks - committee members will each facilitate a different table of themed books; attendees will be able to get a taste of as many books as they want, add to the lists, and share recommendations/thoughts about the books/themes.

12-1pm   Lunch

1-2pm     Table Talks - 3 presenters will facilitate for 20 minutes each (attendees will rotate through) on different types of teen programming; examples will be shared, and discussion/suggestions from attendees encouraged!

2-3pm     Speed Dating - Teen Librarian Style - attendees will be paired up and given prompts (related to maintaining teen interest in the library) which they will each respond to in a short period of time; business cards can be exchanged and ideas recorded before they switch to a new partner.

3-4pm   Book Talks - committee members will share pairs of books - 1 they loved and 1 they didn't love - modeling how to book talk any book to any teen!   Prizes will be given at this time too!

Table Talk Session Descriptions:

Initial Attraction - Outreach (led by Linda Bowman):

Initial Attraction - Social Media (led by Danielle Stine): With over 94% of teenagers now using social media daily, the potential for public libraries to use social media as an outreach and engagement tool is significantly high. Learn how you can use your library’s social media pages to connect with prospective and engaged teen patrons alike.

Initial Attraction - Space (led by Stephanie DeClue): Collaboration, creation, inspiration, relaxation, information, recreation - young adults have many needs for the space they call their own. Join William Jewell College's library director for a conversation about how the ways we think about and utilize space for young adults in libraries have drastically changed in recent years.

1st & 2nd Dates - Maker Programming (led by Linda Bowman):

1st & 2nd Dates - Tech Programming (led by Karin Anders): Want to know about and share different types of fun, easy, trendy, cheap, tech you have used or might want to use with your teens? Join this conversation about our thoughts, ideas, dreams, hopes, and wishes for teen tech programming, and leave with some great new possibilities to try out.

1st & 2nd Dates - Book Programming (led by Jennifer Mendez):  Discuss using YA lit  as a basis to amp up teen programming and create unique experiences. From galley book groups and author events to a murder mystery, the possibilities are as endless as your imagination.

MALA YA Committee Members:

Erin Davies (Chair) thinks she should run the world, but her teens won’t give her permission, so she makes do with running the young adult world at Mid-Continent Public Library’s Woodneath Library Center.

Amanda Barnhart wrestles with craft guns, quests for teen friendly activities, and frisks young adult literature for popularity, all in the name of library teen services. She is the young adult associate at Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library, Trails West branch.

Linda Bowman is the YA Associate at West Wyandotte Library in Kansas City, Kansas. She will be graduating from library school this December and is looking forward to getting back to leisure activities like books, personal grooming, and crafts!

Diana Gehrt is passionate about YA Literature. She has been a matchmaker between teens and the library at Congress Middle School for the last 8 years.  She has a Masters in Library Science and Information Services from UCM and is a National Board Certified Teacher in the area of Library Media. She is Co-President of Greater Kansas City Association of School Librarians, Regional Chair for Missouri Association of School Librarians and has served on the MALA YA Workshop committee for the last four years.  She believes in love at first read and has convinced her students that a blind date with a good book can lead to a lasting relationship.

Lesley Lard is an ice cream lover, a book fanatic, and is a little obsessed with her best friend (and dog) Gingy.  She has been in teen services for several years at different libraries, and is currently the Youth and Teen Services Librarian at Bonner Springs City Library.

Rachel Miller is the Young Adult Librarian at Kansas City, Kansas Public Library's South Branch where she also heads KCK’s Makerspace Committee. Rachel is very handy, always fixing things around the library and leading her teen patrons in (easy and affordable!) makers projects.  Unfortunately she couldn’t be here today because she is on leave recuperating from her latest project…making a baby.

Dennis Ross is a Youth Services Specialist at Johnson County Library.  His beard turned white, but he never really grew up.

Session Presenters:

Dr. Stephanie DeClue is the library director at William Jewell College's Pryor Learning Center. She earned her MLIS in 2002 and her Doctorate of Education in 2013.

Jennifer Mendez has been with Johnson County Library since September 2011, currently as a youth specialist at the Shawnee Branch. She loves working with teens and making memorable experiences at the library!

Danielle Stine is a Social Media Specialist at Gragg Advertising. A mother of 2, with an obsession for video games and knitting, Danielle spends her free time playing hide and seek with controllers or yarn in hand.

Karin Anders received her MLS in 2011 from MU and currently works in teen services for Mid-Continent Public Library at the Claycomo branch. When she's not dreaming about teen library services, you can find her watching bad TV, searching through her Twitter feed, or reading the latest YA release.
