The Wild World of Publishing

The first part of this presentation will be a discussion on best practices for collecting print within the new reality of publishing. Publishing is undergoing a revolution!  The masses are rising and eschewing the traditional publishing route in favor of self-publishing, print-on-demand publishing and small, press publishing.  How can libraries cope with the sheer volume of items we receive from local [and not so local] authors who want to add their book to the library’s collection?  How can we collect effectively when we have so little information?  Finally, how can libraries distinguish the great self-published titles within the mountain of books that pour in weekly?

In the second half of our session we will focus on how to foster original content creation among your customers, in any setting with any budget. We will also discuss the Story Center at Mid-Continent Public Library, identifying partners, potential resources, and more.

Presenters:

Terri Clark is the Collection Development Manager/Team Leader for Mid-Continent Public Library.  Terri believes that W. Somerset Maugham actually said it best, “There are three rules for writing a [great] novel.  Unfortunately, no one knows what they are.”

Andie Paloutzian is currently the Story Center Program Manager at the Woodneath Library Center. She has presented on various topics for the Mid-American Library Alliance, the Metro Area Readers Round Table and the RT Booklovers Convention. She started with MCPL in the spring of 2009 at the Boardwalk Branch. She has a background in retail management and sales training, as well journalism.

Cody Croan is currently the Woodneath Press Manager. He leads a monthly writers' group and has presented on writing groups and writing events in the public library setting at the Public Library Association Conference in 2014. In the pursuit of his undergraduate degree, he worked in Park University's creative writing journal as the Editor in Chief, coordinating book formatting, student submissions, contests, and events. He started with MCPL in the winter of 2010. He has a background in customer service, writing, and philosophy.
