Driving Directions 

The Woodneath Library Center is located north of Highway 152 and Flintlock Rd. in Kansas City, North.  As you head north on Flintlock Rd., on the left side of the road, there is a long, white fence. At the first break in the fence you will turn left.  There is NO sign for the library on Flintlock.  If you see the Shoal Creek Elementary School, you have gone too far.  There is a historic brick home attached to the library.

lynda.com Licenses

Effective October 1st, 2014, Mid-America Library Alliance members can now purchase a license to the more than 2,100 instructional videos available from lynda.com for only $45.00/person.  This license (valued at $375.00) will be good through February 28, 2015.  You can view as many tutorials as you want as often as you want during this period.  Click here for more information or email Kirsten Myers at MALA.

New For Adults vs. For New Adults Fiction 

Whether it’s a new genre or temporary trend, New Adult fiction (meaning fiction written for readers new to adulthood) is an industry hot topic. Join us for a half-day of discussion that will include help developing a core collection, reaching out to the New Adult audience, and ways to recognize New Adult titles.

9-9:30-What is “New Adult:” Brief introduction by Beth Atwater.

Beth Atwater is the Multi-Media Collection Development Librarian for Mid-Continent Public Library. She obsesses over film, television, vampire heroes, and romance novels. When Beth is not selecting library material or working on Reader’s Advisory workshops, she’s attending film festivals and reading New Adult Fiction.

9:30-10:30-Reader Panel and Discussion of Appeal Factors

Moderator—Lisa Palmer is the Book Group Services Coordinator for Mid-Continent Public Library. She is an avid movie and book fan with extensive experience recommending both. Many of Lisa’s careers have been influenced by film and books including a career in the British Territorial Army after her teenaged introduction to the movie “Private Benjamin.”

Readers Panel—Jenny Ellis is the Director of Glenwood Public Library in Glenwood IA. She reads all genres, but is an avid Romance reader and enjoys New Adult books. Jenny specializes in Reader’s Advisory and has previously hosted continuing education workshops on genre fiction.

Readers Panel—Anna Gonzalez Huckeby works at St. Louis County Library. She is a long-time Romance Reader and is currently working on The An-NA Project (https://www.facebook.com/annaprojectnewadult) which involves a commitment to read 3 New Adult titles per week over 60 days.

Readers Panel—Christen Stein is an Associate Director of Public Service at Mid-Continent Public Library. Christen is an avid New Adult reader who also enjoys Young Adult fiction and Non-fiction titles.

10:45-11:15- New Adult Lit Chat with E.J. Wesley

Skype Interview – E.J. Wesley is an author of New Adult fiction and is actively involved in social media. He is the founder of the popular ‘New Adult Lit Chat’ on twitter and a regular contributor of NA Alley - an informational hub for New Adult fiction and community for readers and writers of NA.   He has been actively involved with NA since its first development and brings a great insight to the growth of New Adult.

11:30-12:00-Writing New Adult with Deborah Halverson

Skype Interview –Deborah Halverson is an award winning author and editor with over twenty years of experience in the publishing industry.  Her book ‘Writing New Adult Fiction’ is an incredible resource for anyone wishing to write or have a better understand of the design of New Adult fiction.  She now freelance edits both for published authors and writers seeking their first book deals.  She enjoys editing adult fiction and nonfiction but specializes in Young Adult and New Adult fiction and is the founder of the popular writer’s advice website Deareditor.com.

We prefer all workshops to be prepaid or paid at the door.  If you prefer to be billed, please add $5.  Full refunds or credits are available for cancellations made a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the workshop date less a $5 administrative fee.  You can transfer to another workshop a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the workshop date with no administrative fee.  Cancellations made less than seven (7) days prior to the workshop date receive no refund or credit and you or your organization will be billed.  No shows are billed to you or your organization.
