MoneySmarts: Jobs, Financial Literacy and Consumer Financial Education 

This workshop is a day focused on financial topics. The first part of the workshop will cover information about agencies and sources for searching for jobs. The second part will be an introduction to the new ALA RUSA “Financial Literacy Education In Libraries: Guidelines and Best Practices,” a document devoted to librarians who are interested in programming for financial literacy. The third portion of the workshop will be devoted to improving financial capability for adults and youth. The last part of the workshop will cover budgeting, savings and credit topics for consumers. Through this workshop you will be able to empower your patrons while expanding your financial knowledge.

Presenters: 

Chris LeBeau has been an Associate Teaching Professor at the School of Information Science & Learning Technologies, University of Missouri since 2003. Among the courses she teaches are: Copyright, Business Information Resources, Managing Collections and Access and Managing Electronic Resources. She holds a joint appointment with the University of Missouri-Kansas City as the business librarian where she engages students and faculty in the entrepreneurship program. She is an active member of ALA, RUSA, and BRASS. Some of her publications include: “Start-Ups,” Basic Business Library: Core Resources and Services (2011); "How Well Do Academic Library Web Sites Address the Needs of Database Users with Visual Disabilities?," The Reference Librarian, (2009); "Transitions to Academic Libraries for Business Librarians, and Librarians’ Response to Adjunct Teaching," Journal of Business and Finance Librarianship, (2008); and a committee-authored article, "An Exploration of the Working Relationship Between Systems/IT and Reference/Information Services Staff in an Academic Library Setting," Reference and User Services Quarterly,(2007).  Chris holds a B.A. from Marymount College, a M.L.S from Long Island University, and a M.B.A. from Creighton University.

Sarah A. Cousineau, Marketing and Outreach Director for Central Bank of Kansas City. Sarah is a marketing professional who handles the marketing, advertising, and PR for all locations. She also has a passion for the urban community, and heads the financial literacy program as well as other community events for Central Bank. She reaches out to many non-profits, schools, and other organizations to present financial literacy workshops all throughout the year. Sarah is Vice-Chair of the Money Smart Month Steering committee and also is the Marketing Committee Chair. This will be the 8th year of the campaign, and it has grown exponentially every year.

Along with her commitments to the Money Smart Month Steering Committee, Sarah is currently a member of the ABA Marketing Network, the Kansas City Chapter of the AMA, the Northeast Chamber of Commerce, and volunteers for Junior Achievement, Lead to Read and Boys and Girls Club.

Prior to her position at the bank, Sarah Cousineau spent over 20 years as an advertising executive working in radio and print, and also ran a photography business and a small ad agency. She graduated from UMKC with a BA in 1991.

Greg Housel is a member of the Community Affairs Department of the FDIC.  He currently organizes the Alliance for Economic Inclusion and lends FDIC support to many initiatives in the Kansas City area that foster financial education and products and services for low- and moderate-income families  He came to the FDIC after nearly five years of service to the Housing Authority of Kansas City, Mo. At the Housing Authority he managed the homeownership and financial education programs enabling nearly 1,000 families to complete the Money Smart Financial Education Program and over 150 families to purchase homes.  

His professional career outside of teaching financial education includes managing his own real estate company, construction projects, authoring a book and raising four beautiful children with his wife April.  He is an Ohio State Buckeyes fan, and watches a lot of Mickey Mouse, ninja turtles and Disney movies, and when the kids go to bed, enjoys watching Duck Dynasty, Counting Cars and Pawn Stars.

We prefer all workshops to be prepaid or paid at the door.  If you prefer to be billed, please add $5.  Full refunds or credits are available for cancellations made a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the workshop date less a $5 administrative fee.  You can transfer to another workshop a minimum of seven (7) days prior to the workshop date with no administrative fee.  Cancellations made less than seven (7) days prior to the workshop date receive no refund or credit and you or your organization will be billed.  No shows are billed to you or your organization.
