We all work in libraries, and all of us - at some level - love the books that surround us. But sometimes it’s hard to talk about them. (We all can’t be Nancy Pearl, right?) But the ability to talk about our collection and to promote it to our patrons is at the heart of Readers’ Advisory. This session is about how each of us, no matter what level of the organization we are in, from pages to managers, can excel at Readers’ Advisory. We will discuss what Readers’ Advisory is, how effective practice of it is crucial to the library’s relationship to the community, how to conduct a RA interview with patrons, explore major genres in the book world, discuss resources and databases that can help hone your RA skills, and how you can become your library’s RA ambassador. At the end of the session, each participant will emerge as a Readers’ Advisory ninja with skills that will amaze both patrons and coworkers. (And, just maybe, Nancy Pearl herself.) Participants should come with willingness to learn and participate, a list of a few of their favorite books, and a sense of humor.

Presenters:

Gregg Winsor is a Reference Librarian specializing in Readers’ Advisory for the Johnson County Library. He’s been with JCL since 2006 and enjoys reading literary fiction, noir, and thrillers, among many other genres. He’s married with two children and is astounded that he gets any time to read at all. He believes that you should read Lev Grossman’s THE MAGICIANS if you haven’t already.

Colleen Olinger is an Information Specialist at the Shawnee branch of the Johnson County Library. As a member of the Reader's Advisory committee, she loves connecting readers to books and presenting on RA topics to groups.

Polli Kenn is the Reader’s Advisory Coordinator at the Lawrence Public Library.

Amanda Hendrix has been with the Johnson County Library since 2003 and is currently an Information Specialist at the Leawood Pioneer branch. She enjoys being a member of the Reader's Advisory committee, where all the fun stuff happens. Her specialties are romance and anime/manga, and as of late, she has become an aficionado of children's picture books along with her husband and two kids.
