Description:

If someone who works for you sees you coming, do they smile because they expect praise and gratitude, or do they visibly wince? Positive reinforcement is a proven method of improving productivity; the trick is tailoring it to your workplace so it is specific, sincere, and effective.

Ten Steps:

  • The 90% rule: Most interactions need to be positive.
  • Be concrete, not just, “You are doing a good job”.
  • Tie what the employee is doing to the big picture: how their work contributes to the goals of the strategic plan.
  • Ask for advice, and find reasons to act on it!
  • Provide budget information, and let them choose how to spend it.
  • Be positive, even when someone is in the disciplinary process.
  • Don’t forget the quiet, competent people; they need praise as well.
  • Written thank-you notes are still powerful tools.
  • Publicly boast about the staff in print and in person.
  • Fight for their money!

Outcomes

  1. Focus on what employees and co-workers are doing right.
  2. Improve productivity on old projects.
  3. Increase job satisfaction and good employee retention.
  4. Increase initiative; employees more likely to speak up about problems and solutions.
  5. Shift culture to more positive place to work: reduce negativity as entertainment.
