"Biomedical Ethical Dilemmas: a Framework"

  Application has been made for pre-approval by The Commission for Case Manager Certification to provide continuing education credit to CCM® board certified case managers for  1.25 Ethics CE contact hour(s).

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The presentation will include description, with clinical examples, of the biomedical principles of autonomy, beneficence, nonmaleficence, and justice.  It will also include description, with clinical examples, of information gathering around the categories of medical indications, patient preferences, quality of life, and contextual factors.  Two clinical examples will be presented for discussion and development of recommendations.

At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

  1.  Describe the four basic principles of biomedical ethics.
  2.  Describe the Jonsen and Winslade four box model for discussing clinical ethics dilemmas.
  3. Provide a brief overview of the 8 Principals of Practice and the 6 Rules of Conduct of the CCMC Code of Professional Conduct
  4. Using these tools, develop recommendations for clinical examples of ethical conundrums.

OUR SPEAKER:

Clinical Nurse Specialist in Psychiatry at Harborview Medical Center, 31 years, now retired.  In this role, consulted to nurses on acute care, critical care, and psychiatric units about care of patients with behavioral dysregulation and psychiatric illnesses.  Provided formal and informal education about these topics.  Provided specialized therapies for individual patients. Worked with all staff members, individually and in groups, who experienced work-related traumatic events.

Ethics Consultant at Harborview Medical Center for 29 years.  In this role, provided consultation to patients, family members, and treatment providers of all disciplines, around biomedical ethical dilemmas.  Provided formal and informal education about biomedical ethics topics, including at national conferences.
