PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

Rebecca M. Craft, Ph.D. Herbert L. Eastlick Professor of Psychology Director, Experimental Psychology Doctoral Program Washington State University 

 

Learning Objectives: Describe the quantity, quality and limitations of clinical trials and animal studies testing the efficacy of cannabis and cannabinoids in the treatment of pain. Describe the most common side-effects observed with medicinal use of cannabis and cannabinoids. Describe the known mechanisms of action of the major phytocannabinoids (THC and CBD). Describe caveats and unknowns in regard to patient use of cannabis and cannabinoids (e.g., drug interactions, use in the elderly, quality control of products).

Rebecca Craft earned a Ph.D. in Experimental and Biological Psychology at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1991, completed post-doctoral training in the Department of Pharmacology at the University of AZ, and has been a professor of psychology at Washington State University since 1993.  From 2011-15 she served as Psychology Department chair; she also served as an Associate Dean in the College of Arts and Sciences from 2014-18.  Dr. Craft is currently a Herbert L. Eastlick Distinguished Professor of Psychology.  The primary focus of her research is characterizing sex differences in analgesic and side-effects of opioids and cannabinoids.  She has published over 80 peer-reviewed scientific articles and book chapters, and mentored approximately 20 MS and PhD students and 70 undergraduate researchers.

Learning Objectives: Understanding there can be a “power dichotomy”, real or perceived, between the professional care staff in an elder care residential community, and the caregiver(s) and families of a loved one who is residing there - and learning how to bridge that gap so as to create a safe communication container. Learning how empathic listening, combined with the words they use in dialogue, are key tools professional staff can employ to diffuse stress, anger, anxiety and fear in their interaction with families. The Art of the Pause: Appreciating how emotional triggers can sabotage effective and authentic communication between caregivers, families and care staff.

Don Desonier, JD (Ret), Certified Senior Advisor (CSA)®, provides individual coaching, along with family facilitation and mediation services, to caregivers and families of loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias. His journey to this professional calling is rooted in having been a caregiver to his wife Nancy, who was diagnosed with early-onset dementia in 2008, and passed away from this illness in 2012. Don has a Certificate in Gerontology from the University of Washington Professional and Continuing Education Program. He also has a Juris Doctor degree, and has been trained as an Elder and Adult Family Mediator.
