OBJECTIVES:
Identify health care system supports for managing patients on chronic opioid therapy. Increase awareness of the role of a multidisciplinary team in opioid prescribing and enhancing care of patients on COT. Discuss ways nurses are helping to combat the opioid epidemic.
Jason Fodeman, MD
Jason Fodeman is a board certified internist. In his last roles as Assistant Professor and Associate Medical Director, he led efforts to revamp the opioid prescribing practices of a large, urban resident clinic.
He has held several leadership roles in organized medicine and been published in the peer reviewed literature. The Pennsylvania Medical Society recognized Dr. Fodeman as one of the top 40 Doctors under 40 in Pennsylvania.
Dr. Fodeman completed his undergraduate studies in Economics at Johns Hopkins University. He earned his Medical Doctorate degree from Albert Einstein College of Medicine. While practicing medicine full-time, Dr. Fodeman earned an MBA from the University of Arizona.
Jaymie Mai, Pharm D
Jaymie Mai received her doctor of pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree from the University of Washington in 1996 and completed an American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) accredited residency at the University of Washington Medical Center.
Since starting at the Department of Labor and Industries (L&I) in 2000, she has worked to ensure that safe, appropriate and cost-effective drug therapy is provided to injured workers in Washington. She oversees Washington workers' compensation drug formulary and drug-related policies and collaborates with other state agencies in the development and maintenance of the state's evidence-based preferred drug list (PDL) and other consolidated pharmacy purchasing efforts. Jaymie led the development and implementation of L&I's 2013 Guideline for Prescribing Opioids to Treat Pain in Injured Workers and co-led the update of the Washington State Agency Medical Directors' Group (AMDG) 2015 Interagency Guideline on Prescribing Opioids for Pain.
Jaymie is actively involved in developing opioid guidelines to promote safe and effective treatment and reverse the unintentional overdose deaths involving prescription opioids. She has contributed to publications in the Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Clinics of North America: Evidenced Based Treatment Guidelines for Treating Injured Workers, American Journal of Public Health, American Journal of Industrial Medicine, the International Association of Industrial Accident Boards and Commissions Journal and Journal of Opioid Management.
Her work has earned her the 2012 Governor's Award for Leadership in Management. In addition, Washington is nationally known for its innovation on addressing opioid-related issues and developing an evidence-based formulary. Jaymie's early work on prescription opioid-related deaths is chronicled in Sam Quinones' book, Dream Land.
