Technology's Impact in American History (TIAH) 2020: NASA & the Space Race

Teachers are invited to participate in a 3-day NCHE colloquium on NASA and the Space Race to explore the history of government’s role in shaping technology and promoting innovation in the exploration of space. Teachers who are selected for this program will work at the Astronauts Memorial Foundation at Kennedy Space Center under the guidance of an NCHE team to learn about and create primary source lessons and resources for their classroom.

This program is funded by the Teaching with Primary Sources Program of the Library of Congress.

Teachers attending this 3-day colloquium will examine the impact of the U.S. government in shaping the technology that has propelled us from the first flight to space exploration.  Learn about the role of innovation in American history since the Cold War era "Space Race" to the race to space now by a new generation of entrepreneurs and inventors. An NCHE team including a historian and education specialist will share strategies for using primary sources to engage students, build critical thinking skills, and construct knowledge. Explore Kennedy Space Center and learn to use resources from the Library of Congress collections in your classroom.  Create a lesson for your students with the guidance of the NCHE team. 

Details: 

Each participant will receive a $500 stipend to offset costs associated with attendance (ex. travel or hotel costs).  Teachers are responsible for their own travel and lodging. Logistic suggestions will be provided with acceptance. Breakfast and lunch will be provided at the venue for participants on each day of the colloquium.  Each attendee will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the National Council for History Education and will be eligible for additional professional growth opportunities. 
Participants will be asked to create and share a lesson based on the theme of this colloquium.
