Technology's Impact in American History (TIAH) 2020: Baltimore from the Water

April 24th and 25th, May 9th. 

Participants in the Baltimore from the Water colloquium will examine primary sources from the Library of Congress and the Baltimore Museum of Industry to explore Baltimore's rich history of sailing and ship building.  Learn about the unique geography of Baltimore that led economic growth. Analyze documents related to African American ship builders and sailors. Sail aboard the Pride of Baltimore II as you learn about the role of Baltimore Clipper Ships in times of war and peace. Participants will attend from 8:30am-3:30pm on April 24th and 25th, and from 8:30am-1:00pm on May 9th. 

Teachers selected will work under the guidance of a colloquium team to create primary source lessons and resources for their classroom and for use by other teachers.

This TIAH colloquium is a collaboration between NCHE and the Teaching with Primary Sources Program of the Library of Congress and takes place at the Baltimore Museum of Industry. 

Details: 

Each participant will receive funds to cover the cost of a sub on April 24th, and a work stipend on April 25th and May 9th. Each attendee will receive a complimentary one-year membership to the National Council for History Education. 

After the program, participants will be asked to submit a lesson based on the ideas that they explore during this colloquium.  These lessons will be shared online through the TPS Teachers Network.

Complete the online application.  Applicants must be current K-12 school teachers in Baltimore City or Baltimore County Public Schools. Applications will be accepted until the cap has been reached. Additional applicants will be placed on a wait list.
