Finding Americana: Early Music of the 20th Century and Technology

Throughout American history, inventors and innovators have used their imaginations to create, improve, and promote inventions and innovations that shape our everyday lives. Teachers are invited to participate in a TIAH colloquium on “Finding Americana: Early Music of the 20th Century and Technology" which will take a deep dive into the history surrounding America’s rich cultural and musical contributions of the early 20th Century, and how technology made cross cultural interactions possible. Through examinations of such technologies as portable recording devices and radio, and American icons such as Alan Lomax and Ralph Peer, we invite participants to better undersand American innovation through music. An NCHE team including a historian and education specialist will share strategies for using primary sources to engage students, build critical thinking skills, and construct knowledge. Explore the Musicians Hall of Fame and learn to use primary sources from the Library of Congress in your classroom. Create a lesson for your students with the guidance of the NCHE team. Teachers receive a $500 stipend and a one-year membership in the National Council for History Education. Continental breakfast and lunch provided.
