Baillie Gifford & Co has been an active growth investor since 1908. Analysing historic stock-market returns show two things. First, that a few mega-trends deliver huge addressable markets; second, that returns accrue to a small number of outlier companies who harness those trends. For example, Ford’s dominance in Autos, Apple’s in mobile devices, TSMC’s in semi-conductor manufacturing and today Amazon and Shopify in e-commerce.
Where do investors hunt next for the dominant disruptors? Three Growth Ideas that might change the world will show that the stock-market is throwing up the opportunities for the next decade and beyond. By observing history but keeping the future front of mind, we can think about where the next trillion-dollar companies might be found.
