Careers in Finance and Interview Tips 

Please join us on Tuesday, October 4th as we host a virtual discussion on Careers in Finance and Interview Tips with Ela Karahasanoglu, MBA, CFA, CAIA (Co-head, Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst Association – Toronto Chapter), Neil Simons (PM, Head of Multi-Strategy, Picton Mahoney Asset Management), and Dr. Ranjan Bhaduri (Founder and CEO of Bodhi Research Group). This discussion will be moderated by James Burron, CAIA (Co-Founder & Partner, Canadian Association of Alternative Strategies and Assets)

From the discussion, you will learn more about the different career paths in Finance, how to overcome common challenges people face at the start of their career, and advice from potential employers on what they like to see in a candidate. You will also learn more about different areas of Finance such as Corporate Finance, Enterprise Risk Management, and Wealth Management.

This virtual discussion will be followed by a live Question & Answer period. The audience will have the opportunity to submit questions before and during the discussion.

James co-founded CAASA in response to industry support for a Canadian alternatives association to serve all aspects including: hedge / alternative strategies; liquid alternatives; private lending; private real estate; private equity; plus emerging areas where Canada is a leader such as digital assets / blockchain and robo-advisors. Prior to CAASA, James was the Chief Operating Officer of AIMA Canada where he and his team arranged 50-60 events annually across Canada and organized 100+ committee meetings. He also has experience in research and writing got the CAIA Association and in serving in CAIA’s exam council. He had roles in institutional sales and FoHF structuring in Seoul, South Korea, as a Product Manager at ICICI Wealth Management, and as an Investment Advisor at RBC Dominion Securities. James graduated from Simon Fraser University with a BBA (Finance).

James currently sits on the Canadian Investment Funds Standards Committee (CIFSC) and is also called upon by membership and industry groups to speak to risk ratings and portfolio placement of all types of alternative investments.

Ranjan Bhaduri, CFA, CAIA

Dr. Ranjan Bhaduri is the Founder & CEO of Bodhi Research Group. Bodhi Research Group is focused on research and education in the alternative investments industry.

Dr. Bhaduri has extensive experience in manager research, portfolio management, and due diligence (investment, operational, and structural). He has worked with Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management, a Canadian Fund of Funds and a multi-billion dollar capital management firm. He has also worked with major Canadian banks in Financial Strategy Consulting Group and Global Risk Management and Control. He has collaborated closely with many pensions and sovereign wealth funds on a variety of portfolio matters. Dr. Bhaduri has held an advisory role at the East-West Center, a leading think tank on the Asia-Pacific region, and has taught finance and mathematics at several universities and lectured on Derivatives for the Montreal Exchange.

Dr. Bhaduri holds both the CFA and CAIA charters. He is a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Association of America, and the Toronto CFA Society. Dr. Bhaduri previously served as a member of the All About Alpha Editorial Board, the CAIA Chicago Chapter Executive, on the Board of Directors of AIMA Canada, co-chair of AIMA Canada Managed Futures Committee, and on the AIMA Global Research Committee. Dr. Bhaduri is an avid ice hockey fan and ACBL Silver Life Master in Bridge.

Ela Karahasanoglu, MBA, CFA, CAIA

Ela Karahasanoglu advises institutional investors and asset managers on alternative investments, risk mitigation and portfolio construction from a total portfolio perspective. Previously, Ela led the Total Fund Management team at BCI. With roughly $200bn of managed assets, BCI is a leading provider of investment management services for British Columbia’s public sector.

 Ela has over 20 years of experience in the investment industry with over 13 years dedicated to research, trading, portfolio management and construction in the alternatives and absolute return space. Before joining BCI, Ela was a Managing Director for Multi-Asset Strategies at Investment Management Corporation of Ontario. She also acted as Deputy CIO if the investment team managing WSIB’s $35bn portfolio. Ela was also Vice President of Currency and Asset Allocation team at CIBC Asset Management and was a Principal and Senior Manager Research Consultant in the Alternatives team within Mercer. She was previously Head of Research and Trading at a New York-based quantitative macro hedge fund and has also worked on credit derivatives and asset management at Merrill Lynch, New York.

Ela holds a Master of Business Administration from Georgetown University. She has been a CFA Charterholder since 2002 and a CAIA Charterholder since 2010. Ela serves as the Co-Head for CAIA’s Toronto Chapter.

Neil Simons
Portfolio Manager, Head of Multi-Strategy
Picton Mahoney Asset Management

Neil joined Picton Mahoney Asset Management in June of 2017 as a Portfolio Manager and is currently head of Multi-Strategy Portfolios. He joined Picton Mahoney after spending more than a decade at Northwater Capital Management Inc. as Managing Director, where he led the liquid alternative strategies group and managed custom portfolios for institutional investors. Neil began his career in the industry at Royal Bank of Canada, where he was responsible for enterprise-wide market risk analysis and reporting across the bank’s global trading activities. Neil holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from the University of Manitoba and a Masters in Mathematical Finance from the University of Toronto.
