Community gardeners, get growing at an informative workshop being offered in February by Summit County Extension, the Summit County Master Gardeners and Let's Grow Akron. You’ll learn food-growing basics and get guidance on starting a community garden in Summit County. The workshop is tailored for community gardeners, but anyone with a garden or considering one is welcome to attend.
This event is FREE, but space is limited, and registration is REQUIRED.
Our Key note speaker will be Sophia Buggs of Lady Buggs Farm a 1.3 acre urban farm located on the South Side of Youngstown, Ohio. Sophia, also known as Lady Buggs or Mama Sophia, is reclaiming the sacred roots of farming through sustainable spiritual living. A few of her areas of expertise include specialty crop farming, wildcrafting and fermenting traditional foods. Her mission is to revitalize her community by offering wellbeing from seed to table all while creating a loving urban homestead with her daughter, Passion. Sophia shares her urban wellness and farming insight through plant medicine wisdom, farmers markets, oracle readings, cooking and gardening classes and serving as The Mahoning Valley Food Access Coordinator.
Participants will also have the opportunity to choose from workshops on Soil Health, Weed Management, Garden Planning and creating a Healthy Habitat.
The Expo will showcase resources about starting a community garden, upcoming community garden leader training classes, integrated pest management,
food preservation, seed starting, beekeeping, natural resource conservation,
permaculture and more!
There will also be networking opportunities with other gardeners, Expo participants, OSU Extension, Summit County Master Gardeners and Let's Grow Akron. Garden leaders are welcome to bring flyers to share with potential gardeners or volunteers. And everyone is welcome to bring seeds to share.
Coffee, tea, a water refill station, and light snacks will be available in the morning. There will be a lunch break, so bring a brown bag lunch.
There will be free seeds available, and a raffle!
Doors open at 9:00 am for coffee, networking, and the expo.
The program will start promptly at 10:00 am.
