Start-up Series: Getting Ready to Start Your Business

If you have always dreamed of owning your own business, this workshop is for you!

This program is for entrepreneurs who are just starting out and looking to gather information about the work involved in establishing a new business. Focus is placed on understanding what it takes to start a business, and the advantages and disadvantages of owning your own business.

Topics also covered are the critical success factors in keeping a new business alive, consideration of buying an existing business or franchise versus starting one from scratch, and alternatives such as home-based and online businesses.  Finally, you will get a realistic look at the true challenges of starting and growing a small business in today’s economy.

This program is a precursor to SCORE workshops and our one-on-one counseling. It is fast-paced and covers business plans, licensing and regulatory issues, finance, and marketing, among other topics. After the session, attendees have the opportunity to schedule follow-up counseling and/or sign up for future workshops.


Alex A. Galenes is a SCORE mentor who has been owner and operator of business brokerage firms in the Midwest and in Southern California.  Having earned the Certified Business Intermediary designation, he can speak authoritatively regarding all aspects of the business buy-sell process and is well experienced in rendering opinions of value of on-going businesses.  He has published numerous articles on various aspects of the business buy-sell process and has been active in local, state and national business and international brokerage professional associations.  Additionally, in his prior career as US Army officer who earned his MBA with a specialty in Health Care administration, he served as a professional health care administrator worldwide within the military health care system.

Ron Woodhill is the former President and Chairman of R. W. Smith and Company, CA, and former President of Allied Buying Corporation, IL.  His expertise and specialties relate to all aspects of distribution, marketing and sales in the commercial food service industry.  Ron also has extensive hands-on experience with setting up Employee Stock Option Plans (ESOPs) as well as developing various exit strategies. A graduate of the Owner/ President Management Program Harvard School of Business, Ron has served on various boards of directors, including the Bank of Rancho Bernardo, CA and the Food Equipment Distributors Association, IL.
