BASIC MEDIATION TRAINING

 October 4th -7th, 2018  

Thursday – Sunday, 9am to 5:30pm

CMS mediation division is the only Community Dispute Resolution Center (CDRC) in Queens that is certified and funded by the New York State Unified Court System. 

Community Mediation Services (CMS) is a not-for-profit organization with more than 35 years of experience in empowering and unifying communities. CMS offers humane and empowering ways that enable youth, families and communities to positively engage in conflicts. 

Our professional staff and cadre of volunteers deliver diverse training programs in conflict resolution and mediation services for all community members.

This comprehensive 32 Hour Basic Mediation Training is designed to provide a firm foundation in facilitative mediation, with a blend of theory and practice. New mediators will gain diverse skills to empower parties and help them to constructively handle with their issues and restructure their relationship.

 The Training is approved by the NYS Unified Court System’s Office of ADR Programs as Part 146 Approved for 24 Hours of Initial Mediation Training.

Trainer: Elena Sapora

Elena Sapora is a certified initial mediation trainer by the NYS unified court system office of ADR and court improvement programs. Incorporating her background in theater and movement, Elena has trained audiences of all ages in mediation, conflict resolution, and communication skills.

CMS Mentors: Mark Kleiman and Tzofnat Peleg-Baker  

Mark Kleiman, Esq. Founder of CMS. Mark established CMS with the vision of a building a safe space for Queens’s community members where they are empowered and acquire wide-ranging skills to constructively approach their conflicts and life challenges.

Tzofnat Peleg-Baker, M.A. Communications, M.A.; Ph.D. studies in Psychology (specialty in conflict and mediation). Senior Director of Mediation at CMS. She is also teaches MBA students in the School of Business at Rutgers University in negotiation and conflict management. Her approach is Relational based.

Mediation Apprenticeship Program: 

Participants who successfully complete the CMS Basic Mediation Training can apply for theCMS Mediation Apprenticeship Program. The Mediation Apprenticeship Program lasts at least 13 weeks and involves meeting once per week with an experienced mediator mentor and one or two other apprentices. Beginning with observing and debriefing mediations, apprentices work towards co-mediating mediations. Upon a successful completion of the Apprenticeship Program, apprentices are evaluated by a CMS staff member to be approved to join the CMS panel of volunteer Mediators. We are currently expanding our cadre of our volunteer mediators. Our volunteers enjoy a wide range of advanced and specialized trainings.  

The cost of Apprenticeship Program is $850

After completing the Basic Mediation Training, participants are eligible to apply for the CMS Apprenticeship program.  Upon successful completion of these training programs, participants may apply to serve on the CMS Volunteer Mediators' Panel and participate in advanced trainings.

Application submission and payment is not a guarantee of acceptance into the training program. 

Should your application be rejected for whatever reason, a full reimbursement will be provided. 

Final acceptance to a training, apprenticeship, or panel provided by CMS is at the discretion of the organization.

 Placement on any court roster is at the discretion of the local Administrative Judge.  Participation in an approved or provisional course does not guarantee placement on a local court roster.
