First Communion Class 2018

February 4 - March 11

Retreat: Saturday, 3/10 & First Communion Mass: Sunday, 3/11

First Communion class is open to all children who are at least 6 years of age, regardless of whether they have received Communion in the past. We will be taking a deeper look at the meaning of Communion and Sacramental Grace leading up to the First Communion Mass, which will take place on Sunday, March 11 at 9:00 am. The class will meet for five 45-minute sessions and end with a half-day retreat, which will be on Saturday, March 10.

 What is First Communion Class?

First Communion class is a program for children of at least six years of age to help them get the most out of Mass by giving them the instruction they need to participate in a more well-informed and intentional way.

My child already receives Communion. Can she still participate?

In the Episcopal Church, every baptized Christian is allowed to receive Communion, so naturally some children have already received Communion. Other parents choose to wait until their child has had instruction before permitting them to receive Communion. But whether this is your child’s first Communion or their 300th, this class is valuable because it will give her a new and deeper experience of the Mass.

When does this class meet?

The program we are using this year is part of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Curriculum which we use in Sunday school. It has five one-hour sessions and a half-day retreat for the children. All meetings will be at the St. Columba’s Church in the Level II Atrium (Cottage #301).

  • Sunday, 4 February @ 11:00 - 11:45 am
  • Sunday, 11 February @ 11:00 - 11:45 am
  • Sunday, 18 February @ 11:00 - 11:45 am
  • Sunday, 25 February @ 11:00 - 11:45 am
  • Saturday, 10 March @ 10:00am - 12:30p (1/2-day retreat)
  • Sunday, 11 March @ 9am - First Communion Mass
When is the First Communion Mass?

The First Communion Mass will be on Sunday, March 11 at 9:00am. The children will be front and center, and the whole parish will celebrate this important rite of passage with them. You may want to invite friends and family to join us as well.  Children should be at church on the morning of March 11 by 8:30 am, since they are part of the procession at the 9:00 Mass.
