Constructed Response Questions 7-15-14

Speaker: Abell & Atherton Educational Consulting, Inc.

Target Audience:

Teachers grades 2-8, Special Education teachers, administrators, instructional coaches, curriculum resource teachers

Description:

What makes the constructed response question, a staple of the K-PREP, still such a mystery to Kentucky teachers?  This workshop will help teachers and administrators from all grade levels understand some basic tenets of the creation of both short and extended constructed response questions as well as the analysis of live student responses in order to guide instruction.  Helping teachers to view these higher order questions as an integral tool for classroom instruction and assessment, rather than an “add on,” will lead them to effective use of this assessment tool.

This one-day training, presented by former KDE regional consultants, will show teachers how they can write their own questions that are

  • Embedded in a standards-based unit of study
  • Similar to those questions on the K-Prep
  • Founded in National Standards – content and performance standards
  • Based on higher-order thinking

Workshop participants will use new standards-based documents in order to create effective questions that will be immediately usable in their classrooms.  They will also be lead through the process of analyzing live student work for strengths, weaknesses, and instructional implications.  The group will have the opportunity to share strategies and suggestions as they build understanding of the basis of this essential assessment tool, the constructed response question.

As a result of the workshop, teachers will receive

  • Graphic Organizers for writing good questions and for helping students answer questions at a high level
  • Tools created for analysis of student responses to constructed response questions
  • Time to share ideas with other schools and to network in a risk-free environment.
