Welcome to the Great Tree Summit 2016.
Taking Root is excited to present the 3rd annual Great Tree Summit! We have an exciting and informative morning lined up for you. Taking Root thanks the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden for hosting this event which will take place in Peacock Pavillion (see directions and maps on the left sidebar). All proceeds from the $15.00 charge will go directly to the Taking Root Tree Fund. The fee includes admission to the zoo and free parking (a $24 value), so after an inspirational morning, stick around and enjoy the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Gardens, and maybe grab a bite to eat at the Basecamp Cafe, the greenest restaurant in the country.

Mike Hayman - In 1987 Mike, a resident and photographer for the Louisville Courier Journal with no real tree experience wound up with the responsibility to come up with a plan to replace trees in a small city near Louisville after a storm damaged many of the communities trees. Rather than replace pin oaks with pin oaks and red maples with red maples, Mike quickly became enamored with the idea of planting a diversity of trees. The focus was on large over-story trees that would live for 100 years or more, but smaller ornamental species were planted also. The streets of Seneca Gardens are now a veritable arboretum and few small towns are the equal for the immediate sense of community and home that one instantly feels when they visit the canopied neighborhoods of Seneca Gardens. Join us to hear Mike’s story.
Meredith Cobb - Is originally from St. Louis Missouri and moved to Ohio to attend Antioch College where she received a B.A. in Environmental Science and Education. During her education there she worked on a trail crew in Arizona, studied ants in Brazil, led canoe trips in Missouri, and worked at the Glen Helen Environmental Education Center in Yellow Springs. Meredith caught the tree bug while working with a City Arborist in Cape Cod Massachusetts. She returned to Ohio to work for Five Rivers MetroParks in 2008 where her focus has been on native plant propagation and restoration. Join us for her presentation, Biodiversity from the Ashes: concepts and methods for community-engaged forest restoration in response to an insect pest catastrophe.

Stick around after the summit for networking and to view “Trees in Trouble” a 30 minute documentary film by local filmmaker Andrea Torrice about the plight of urban forests.
Come early! The gates will open at 8:15 AM. Allow time to walk from the parking lot to the Peacock Pavilion.
