Breaking Bias: Lessons from the Amistad Part 1 & 2

February 8, 2023

(In-Person)

“My part has been to tell the story of the slave. The story of the master never wanted for narrators.” –Frederick Douglas

New Jersey’s Amistad law requires African American history to be taught as an integral part of American history throughout the school year, not just during Black History Month.

This workshop, which combines parts 1&2 of our virtual version, will introduce participants to units 1 through 5 of our Breaking Bias: Lessons from the Amistad curriculum and offer strategies for teaching African American history from an anti-bias lens. These units address race as a social construct, chattel slavery both nationally and in New Jersey, The Reconstruction Era, Jim Crow and the Great Migration, and the dawning of the Civil Rights Movement. Lessons align with NJ Student Learning Standards for social studies.

This workshop is free for educators.

5.5 Professional Development credits are available to educators who attend the entire training.

"NO SHOW" Policy: If you register and do not attend the workshop, we will notify you that you have been placed on the "No Show" list. Should this occur THREE times, you will be removed from our email list and all future registrations will be canceled.
