Kids Cooking for Kids Entry Form

Nothing says, “get well soon” like a home cooked meal of chicken soup! That’s why we’re looking for kids to submit their best recipe and at the same time raise funds for an Emergency Pediatric Pod at South Health Campus. If you are between the ages of 9 – 14 and think you make the best chicken soup and are interested in a soup cook-off to help raise money for kids in need, we want to hear from you!

THE PROJECT

Pediatric emergency services are in high demand at SHC. South Health Campus Emergency Department sees 15 per cent of all pediatric Emergency Department visits in Calgary. This is the highest percentage outside the Alberta Children’s Hospital (ACH) and makes up approximately 25 per cent of the daily patient volume admitted to the SHC ED.

Currently, pediatric patients are cared for in four designated beds within the adult emergency unit. As patient volumes and acuity increase for all age groups; it becomes challenging to keep this pediatric care area separate without compromising access to emergency care for other patients. This is increasingly exposing children to non-ideal, adult situations.

SHC has already taken steps to provide specialized pediatric services. Although the rooms are generic and not designed for specific pediatric needs, physicians from the ACH ED provide coverage daily during peak hours (1:00pm -1:00am). The SHC emergency nursing group has also received enhanced pediatric training.  Therefore the only element missing is a dedicated pediatric space within the South Health Campus Emergency Department.
