Who is Ari?

Ari Weinzweig is the the co-founder of the amazing Zingerman’s Community of Businesses located in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  According to Inc. Magazine, Ari’s book, A Lapsed Anarchist’s Approach to Building a Great Business, is one of the Top 10 MUST read business books.

Ari moved to Ann Arbor from his hometown of Chicago to attend the University of Michigan. After graduating with a degree in Russian history, he went to work washing dishes in a local restaurant and soon discovered that he loved the food business. Along with his partner Paul Saginaw, Ari started Zingerman’s Delicatessen in 1982 with a $20,000 bank loan, a staff of two, a small selection of great-tasting specialty foods and a relatively short sandwich menu. Today, Zingerman’s is an Ann Arbor institution—the source of great food and great experiences for over 500,000 visitors every year. Each day the Deli serves up thousands of made-to-order sandwiches with ingredients like corned beef and pastrami, homemade chopped liver and chicken salad. The Deli stocks an array of farmhouse cheeses, smoked fish, salamis, estate-bottled olive oils, vintage vinegars, whole bean coffees, loose leaf teas and much more. Ari and Paul have built Zingerman’s into an organization with a 500+ staff and annual sales over $50,000,000 a year.

Ever wondered why the leadership style that served you so well back when you began your business seems to have grown increasingly ineffective over the years?  Feel like you just can’t keep up with your business’ growth?  Feeling like you have way too many meetings?  But no matter how many you have you still can’t keep things organized?  If you’ve had those experiences, you aren’t alone.

Looking for a new approach that might help to ease some of this stress?  This session will take a different approach, exploring in the four levels of leadership, first designed by Dr. Edgar Schein and later adapted by the folks at Zingerman’s and ZingTrain, the morning’s work is guaranteed to give you a much different, more holistic and effective approach where, rather than imposing our old comfortable, often, out of date, style onto everyone else even if it’s become increasingly infective, we can learn to adapt our style of leadership to the stage of organizational growth we’re in.

Understanding the four levels of organization growth and the styles that are best suited to leading in them can significantly increase your leadership effectiveness, reduce stress and help your staff and customers to do the same.

Attend this powerful morning session and emerge as a leader ready to:

  • Produce a positive effect on your bottom line;
  • Motivate your employees;
  • Evangelize your customers;
  • Make your company stand out from the competition.

Employers will discover:

  • 4 levels of leadership which entrepreneurs must transition through in order be an effective leader.
  • New skills and knowledge that can improve their bottom-line performance as a leader.
  • How to implement and sustain effective change in their business.

Employees will discover:

  • How they can improve their leadership skills and therefore improve their opportunities for advancement.
  • A clear path for the skills they need to develop to move into new leadership positions within the company they work for.
  • Why effective self-management will almost always make or break the work they do.

More About Zingmeran's

In 1982 Ari Weinzweig and Paul Saginaw opened a small, 25-seat delicatessen.  Today Zingerman’s Community of Businesses includes 8 different businesses (all in the Ann Arbor area) with over 500 employees and $50 million in annual sales.

The Zingerman’s Community of Businesses (ZCoB) is a family of eight businesses all located in the Ann Arbor area and reflects the novel strategy for business growth created by Zingerman’s Deli founders Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig. Rather than replicating their deli through the franchise model, Paul and Ari instead chose to develop new, independent businesses, all rooted in our local community that work together as one organization. Each business is operated by one or more managing partners who share ownership and put their particular expertise to work in the day to day running of their business. The idea for the ZCoB was laid out in Zingerman’s 2009 vision, written by Ari and Paul in 1994 and highlighted in Bo Burlingham’s 2003 article for Inc. Magazine, “The Coolest Small Company in America.” In 2006, the ZCoB managing partners began work on Zingerman’s 2020 vision. It was completed a year later and paints a picture of the ZCoB at the end of the next decade. Zingerman’s 2020 vision was featured in a New York Times article from June 2007, “The Corner Deli that Dared to Break Out of the Neighborhood.”
