New Perspectives: From Eating Disorders to Nutritional Health

Welcome!

This program is intended for physicians in all specialities, psychologists, advanced practice nurses, social workers, physician assistants, dieticians and other professionals engaged in treating patients with eating disorders.  We hope that you will join us for this event but there is a virtual option for anyone who cannot attend in person.

In support of improving patient care, Maine Medical Center (MMC) is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. MMC can accredit continuing education activities with the following credit types: Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE), Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), American Academy of Physician Assistants (AAPA), and American Psychological Association (APA) and Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR).  6.0 credits have been approved.

Program Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:  
  1. Understand that appetite satiety are linked to hormonal changes and not a matter of will power
  2. Understand the pathophysiology of obesity and neurodysregulation of energy balance
  3. Develop a case conceptualization of dimensional restrictive eating behaviors without frank body image disturbance
  4. Appreciate the presentation and possible risk factors for restrictive eating in different populations including overlap with medical conditions
  5. Understand microbial underpinnings of common neuropsychiatric conditions
  6. Introduction to gut microbiome sampling/analysis
  7. Apply evidence-based/best practice interventions for eating disorders and co-occurring diagnoses

Meet Your Presenters

Kathleen Hart, Ph.D. received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Boston College. She completed her graduate clinical training at The Judge Baker Clinic at The Children’s Hospital of Boston and at The Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and her predoctoral training at The Children’s Hospital of Colorado. Before starting her private practice, Dr. Hart worked at Bethesda Hospital of Englewood, Colorado on the Eating and Substance Use Disorder units. Dr. Hart has also devoted a portion of her career researching the relationship between parental attachments, gender roles and Eating Disorders. Her research findings are published in the Journal of Psychological Assessment, Journal of Counseling and Clinical Psychology and the Journal of Sex Roles.

A practicing licensed psychologist for over 20 years in Falmouth, Maine, Dr. Hart specializes in treating Eating Disorders. She works with all gender children, adolescents and adults with Eating Disorders including Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorders, Avoidant Restrictive Food Intake Disorders and Athletes with Eating Disorders. She also works with individuals struggling with body esteem and body dysmorphia.

Dr. Hart uses a variety of treatment modalities depending on the needs of her clients. These include: Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Mindfulness training, Family Based Treatment and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Dr. Hart has given numerous presentations and keynote speeches at various Eating Disorders conferences.

Helen Burton Murray, MD is the Director of GI Behavioral Health in the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Neurointestinal Health. Dr. Burton Murray specializes in psychogastroenterology, specifically in the intersection of gastrointestinal conditions and eating disorders. Her clinical and translational research program identification of shared mechanisms in these conditions and development of interventions to improve nutritional and gastrointestinal outcomes. She has a particular expertise in the assessment and treatment of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder in the context of functional gastrointestinal disorders.

Caroline M. Apovian, MD, FACP, FTOS, DABOM is Co-Director of the Center for Weight Management and Wellness (CWMW) in the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Hypertension at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a member of the faculty at Harvard Medical School. For over thirty years, Dr. Apovian has held a position at the forefront of the obesity and nutrition fields. One of the world’s premier weight management experts, she has distinguished herself as a leading researcher, healthcare provider, teacher, and New York Times bestselling author. 

Her current research interests are weight change and its effects on adipose tissue metabolism and inflammation, obesity and cardiovascular disease, resolution of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease in the bariatric surgery population, disparities in the treatment of obesity in underserved populations, and novel pharmacotherapeutic agents for the treatment of obesity. She is also an expert in sampling subcutaneous adipose tissue and muscle tissue in humans and has been studying the relationship between adipose tissue inflammation and obesity for over 15 years. 

Dr. Apovian has published over ten books and over 200 peer-reviewed original research and review articles on obesity and nutrition.
Tonya Spaulding, RDN, LD is a Registered, Licensed Dietitian, whose practice is guided by the  empirical principles of “Health At Every Size” (HAES).  She believes that respecting all persons in all bodies is the weight-inclusive, compassionate, self-care approach to wellness that achieves the most affirmative outcomes.

Tonya has been providing health and wellness nutritional care in a variety of settings for over 15 years. Tonya specializes in evidence-based, medical nutrition therapy and nutrition counseling across a wide variety of settings including clinical, long-term/skilled rehabilitation care, community outreach, outpatient therapy and behavioral health care. She has worked with clients with eating disorders in residential, partial hospitalization, and intensive outpatient programs, and currently focuses on providing virtual and in-person outpatient therapy. 

She founded Casco Bay Nutrition in 2017 through which she provides weight inclusive nutrition therapy for individuals with lived experiences including eating disorders, chronic dieting and compulsive exercise patterns.

Patrice Lockhart, MD has recently completed an 18-year tenure as Medical Director of the New England Eating Disorders Program, and is returning to private practice. She is a graduate of the College of Wooster, the University of Nebraska Medical Center, and the Cleveland Institute of Music. As a board certified psychiatrist, she works with adults, adolescents and families in addressing mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and primarily eating disorders.   She uses a behavioral approach, and often see patients and families make significant improvements quickly with a unified front. Medication management is certainly a tool used in her treatment approach, but medications are an adjunct to working together to modify behaviors and to achieve an improved sense of self.  In addition, she has provided psychiatric consultation for acute psychiatric presentations at the emergency departments of Mercy Hospital and Maine Medical Center, and currently, serves as a consultant for outpatient medical practices.

Raaj S. Mehta, MD is a postdoc at the Broad Institute in Curtis Huttenhower and Andy Chan's labs, and the chief gastroenterology fellow at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He also co-advised by Emily Balskus in the Harvard Chemistry and Chemical Biology Department. As a physician scientist with 10+ years of gastroenterology research experience, I’m interested in the gut microbiome, drug metabolism, and data science, applied to precision medicine. My clinical interests lie in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and motility disorders.

Dr. Mehta graduated from The Lawrenceville School in 2006, from Princeton University in 2010 with a degree in Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and with a certificate from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public & International Affairs, and with a degree in medicine from Harvard Medical School in 2016.  He was a Fulbright scholar to Ecuador from 2010 to 2011 and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Medical Research Fellow from 2014 to 2015.  He completed residency in Internal Medicine, through the Stanbury Physician-Scientist Pathway, at the Massachusetts General Hospital, and was a Chief Resident at the Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Dr. Mehta is pursuing my Master in Public Health with a concentration in Quantitative Methods at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health.
