Our annual long weekend at TheRetreat up can be summed up in three words:   FUN SPIRIT * LEARNING. Please join us for a long weekend of learning with outstanding speakers, lay-led worship, sports and camaraderie. Come and make this longstanding tradition your own.

We are pleased to announce that one Scholar in Residence for 2018 will be Rabbi Leonard Gordon who co-directs INTERFAITH PARTNERS FOR PEACE, an organization helping Rabbis and Ministers rebuild centrist discourse around the conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. This May he will receive a Doctor of Ministry degree in Interfaith Studies from the Andover Newton Theological School. Rabbi Gordon is rabbi emeritus at the Germantown Jewish Centre in Philadelphia and served Congregation Mishkan Tefila as senior rabbi from 2010-2016. He has taught Comparative Religion and Humanities at Kenyon College and the Ohio State University, and rabbinic literature at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, the Jewish Theological Seminary and Hebrew College. Rabbi Gordon's lectures will focus on: The Jewish-Muslim Encounter: From Texts to Relationships.

Our other Scholar in Residence will be Dr. Richard Freund who is a Professor of Jewish History and Director of the Center for Judaic Studies at the University of Hartford. He is a field archaeologist and historian who has developed a new method for working on sites with social, political, and religious sensitivities where traditional archaeological technique cannot easily be used. Professor Freund has directed over a dozen archaeological projects on behalf of the University of Hartford in Israel, including sites associated with the beginnings of Christianity and Judaism. In addition, he has directed projects on behalf of the University of Hartford in Spain, Poland, Rhodes, Greece and Lithuania. His most recent work using Ground Penetrating Radar and Electrical Resistivity Tomography in Lithuania has been chronicled in a recent NOVA science series episode: “Holocaust Escape Tunnel” on the new discoveries made in the Holocaust era Ponar Burial Pits and at the Great Synagogue of Vilna. Dr. Freund will speak about his work in Israel and in Lithuania.
