Adventures in STEM with UCAR: "Exploring Weather Science"

CABPES and the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) present, “Exploring Weather Science” for students in 5th-12th grades. Students will have opportunities to learn all about careers and sciences in the weather and climate fields through a variety of virtual experiences including weather science experiments, field trips, trivia competitions, “meet the experts” events and hands-on experiences.

All events will take place on a Tuesday evening from 6-7pm MTN in the CABPES Zoom Room. Some events are for older students, some are for younger students and there are two events that everyone can attend. Please read the event descriptions during your registration process for specific dates and age ranges.

The events to choose from are:

October 12: 3D-Printed Science Labs and the Internet of Things

We'll join NCAR scientist Agbeli Ameko to discover the amazing things that can be done with simple materials and 3D printers, like building do-it-yourself weather stations!

October 26: Weather Wow! Up in the Air

How do some storm clouds form, and what keeps them up in the air?! Let's do a hands-on experiment to explore this mystery and learn how air behaves when it changes temperature. NCAR meteorologist Curtis Walker will be here to answer all of your weather questions.

November 2: The Art and Science of Data Visualization

Complicated scientific data is often easier to understand when we can see it in pictures! NCAR scientist Nihanth Cherukuru will tell us how he combines art, science, and game development to create ways of seeing science data such as air temperature, winds, and sea ice formation. If you have a smartphone or tablet, you can play along with Meteo AR, the augmented reality app!

November 9: "Live" Virtual Tour of the NCAR Mesa Lab

Since we can't go to the Mesa Lab in person, we'll bring the Mesa Lab to you! Join us for a virtual "tour" of the NCAR Mesa Lab weather, climate, and Sun exhibits, including a 360° virtual tour, augmented reality, videos, and more!

Due to the number of events a student may choose to attend, parents may only register one student at a time. If you would like to register multiple students please know that you will be required to complete the entire registration form for each student you register. There is not an option to register more than one student at a time.

These events are meant to be a fun way for your students to learn more about weather science. All of the events are free to attend but we ask that you please do show up to the events you register for.

We hope to see you there.
