Presentations both days will alternate speakers Mark Parlee, the Building Consultant, Clay Lamb, Ask the Chimney Sweep, and Dylan Chalk, ASHI Certified Inspector and ASHIWW vice-President.
We begin Friday at 7 am with registration and breakfast buffet, followed with meetings and presentations, an update from Department of Licensing.

With numerous products available in the marketplace, home inspectors are faced with the challenge of inspecting a wide range of building finishes. Each of these products has advantages and disadvantages as well as the potential for water intrusion. This poses a dilemma for inspectors because, except in special instances, inspections are non-intrusive, meaning that there is no way to easily assess the condition of the home's sheathing. Therefore, it is critical that the inspector be familiar with the different finishes, how they are properly installed, and how to identify installation problems that may have compromised the protective envelope. This seminar (8 CE hours) will be led by Mark Parlee, a consultant who specializes in the building envelope and its performance in protecting the interior. The seminar will provide the attendees with a comprehensive understanding of the elements that comprise a building's envelope, the details needed to ensure a good moisture barrier, an understanding of the most common finish/siding types, their typical "failure" modes, and the ability to recognize the signs of likely water intrusion. One product will receive special attention: Adhered Manufactured Stone Veneer. In practice, inspectors are coming across this product more and more frequently, and Mark feels that this may be the "next EIFS".
Mark Parlee, is a Building Consultant with over 40 years in the construction trades, having worked as a framing and siding carpenter, homebuilder, remodeler, and exterior renovator. While working in these trades, he has built, or dismantled and replaced the exteriors on several hundred homes. This has allowed him to see what works, and to also see the problematic details that have led to moisture intrusion into the building envelopes and to effect corrections. Mark currently uses the expertise gathered over his life's work as a consultant on construction defects and moisture intrusion, an expert witness, and a seminar presenter. He is EDI-certified as an EIFS Inspector/Moisture Analyst/Quality Control and is also certified by EDI as a Building Envelope II, Steep-Slope Roof Inspector, and instructed the first EDI Stove Veneer Inspection Seminar. He is certified by Snell Group as a Level I Infrared Thermographer. Mark has been a guest lecturer for Architecture Forensics at Iowa State University. Mark has also attained certification as a building Envelope Investigator through BESI (Building Envelope Science Institute).
Clay Lamb, Ask the Chimney Sweep, offers fast-paced, attention-grabbing presentations (6 CE hours), everything about chimneys and fireplaces. Presentations include: 8 parts of a chimney; when is a Level 2 inspection required; identifying the most common chimney and fireplace problems; they are called factory-built zero-clearance of prefab fireplaces; gas-fueled stoves, fireplaces, gas logs, vent-free and direct-vented appliances; wood-burning stoves and fireplaces.
Clay Lamb is the owner of American Chimney & Masonry located in Cincinnati, Ohio. In business for over 36 years, his company has performed over 104,000 service calls. He has produced more than 140 educational videos that can all be found on his Youtube channel, youtube.com/user/askthechimneysweep.
Dylan Chalk is the owner of Dylan Chalk House Talk real estate school, the co-founder of ScribeWare LLC report writing software, www.getscribeware.com, the owner of Orca Inspection Services LLC and the author of The Confident House Hunter, Cedar Fort Press 2016. Dylan is a Washington State licensed home inspector, a structural pest inspector, and a licensed real estate clock-hour instructor. Dylan is an ASHI Certified Inspector and now serves as Vice-President of the local ASHI Western Washington chapter. He has performed more than 5,000 home inspections.
