Spotting Economics in Young Adult Literature

Designed for Middle and High School teachers

This interactive workshop introduces participants to the concept of using popular young adult literature to teach the economic concepts of choices, cost & benefits, decision-making, market systems, opportunity cost, and scarcity.

Featured book titles include, Twilight, The Lord of the Rings, The Hunger Games, Pride and Prejudice, and Jane Eyre.  Included are classroom-ready lessons, a topical bibliography, and door prizes.

 Presentation Content and Teaching Methods

Participants will work through the activity-based lessons as they become familiar with some of the methods used to present the concept of locating economic concepts in literature.   A PowerPoint will supply visuals of activity sheets and support materials. 

 Materials/Resources to be distributed:

  • Each participant will receive copies of the lessons. (Each lesson includes Story Synopsis, Content Connection, Time Requirements, Objectives, Standard Correlations, Materials List, Economic Concepts, Procedure and an Evaluation or Extension Activity.)
  • Each participant will also receive a topical bibliography that details young adult literature featuring strong economic concepts.
  • Session door prizes include paperback copies of the featured titles.
