AWWA's Cybersecurity Guidance Tool For the Water Sector - Washington 

As water professionals know, cybersecurity is one of the greatest issues facing water systems in the 21st century. AWWA is unveiling a FREE workshop in Oregon and Washington to equip utilities to effectively use AWWA's cybersecurity resources. 

This four hour class will provide utility owners in the water sector with the ability to quickly review their control system architecture and use against national standards, guidelines and best practices for the secure operation of their control systems and technology assets. 

Utilizing the Cybersecurity Guidance Tool and interpreting the recommended controls requires that users understand their control system architecture, connections to their business networks, how control system data is used by operations and other staff, and what remote access systems are used. The system information is used to select a series of "Use Cases" in the tool that then identifies what controls are required to protect the control system. 

This workshop will provide the end user education, guidance and examples of how to use the AWWA Cybersecurity Guidance Tool. This workshop consists of three modules that focus on (1) how to select the applicable use cases, (2) how the controls generated by the use cases are derived from the standards, and (3) how to move forward with the controls to improve security on the control system by developing a customized cybersecurity improvement plan. 

Prerequisite:  Attendees must view an AWWA webinar prior to class. The link will be emailed to workshop registrants a few days prior to the workshop.  

Audience: Cybersecurity managers. Attendees may include a wide variety of job titles: operator, security manager, IT specialist - and includes anyone at the utility responsible or cybersecurity.

Michael Karl (Brown and Caldwell) - Subject Matter Expert Cybersecurity

Michael is the National Automation Leader for Brown and Caldwell. For the past 14 years, Michael has focused on helping agencies reinforce cybersecurity to protect their critical infrastructure. His experience includes one of the largest federally funded efforts in Washington State for cybersecurity enhancements. Michael has delivered over 20 cybersecurity presentations and workshops for regional and national organizations, including AWWA. He regularly presents at universities and has served on expert panels for the SANS Institute and participated in their CISSP training. Michael is skilled in helping municipal utilities of all sizes evaluate, plan and implement cybersecurity measures to protect their digital systems.
