Every business has a name. Sometimes the business sells products, each of which has its own name. We call these names “trademarks” or “brands” and they can be your business’s most valuable assets.

This workshop will explore trademark selection, registration and maintenance. We will talk about what makes a strong trademark, how and when to register the mark with the US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO), the proper way to use a trademark in marketing materials, and the pitfalls of improper trademark usage.

You will learn:

• How to identify whether a proposed mark is strong or weak;
• How to conduct a cursory search to find if a mark is available;
• What the standards are to determine if one mark “infringes” on another;
• What is the meaning of “goodwill” and how to you protect it;
• What it costs to register a trademark with the USPTO;
• A bit about the registration process; and
• The importance of domain names in trademark selection and protection.
