The Effective Group Psychotherapist

An Online Workshop with

Dr. Molyn Leszcz

oWe are honoured and excited to welcome Dr. Moiyn Leszcz to facilitate this online workshop focused on increasing our effectiveness as group therapists. He will examine the evidence based factors that contribute to therapist effectiveness in group therapy, looking at the finding that, although the psychotherapies are generally equivalently effective, not all therapists are equally effective. Using theory, clinical examples and opportunities for experiential learning, Molyn will address what unfolds at the level of the therapeutic relationship that can improve or impede clinical effectiveness.Join us for this exciting opportunity to learn from a skillful teacher and seasoned group leader.  

Learning Objectives: 

• Examine key evidence-based elements that contribute to group therapist effectiveness 

• Integrate research, theory and clinical practice 

• Gain capacity to activate the group within the here and now 

• Understand the opportunities and risks of therapist use of self and transparency 

• Utilize counter transference to enhance effectiveness.

Molyn Leszcz, MD, FRCPC, CGP, AGPA-DF is a psychiatrist, an academic and an author. Throughout his career he has trained countless group therapists and instilled in them his boundless passion for the work. He has led groups as a clinican and has assumed challenging leadership roles in health care and most recently as the President of the American Group Pscyhotherapy Association. He has also worked extensively in the areas of physician wellness and the effects of pandemic stress on health care providers. (he coincidentally served his term as leader of AGPA during the Covid crisis). He is a co-author with Irvin Yalom of  the 5th (2005) and 6th (2020) editions of the Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy, a seminal text for many group therapists. Molyn is also co-author of one of the Psychotherapy Essentials to Go series, ' Achieving Psychotherapy Effectiveness' (2015).Dr. Leszcz was awarded  both the Anne Alonso Award for Outstanding Contributions to Psychodynamic Group Psychotherapy as well as a Distinguished Fellowship award by the American Group Psychotherapy Association. He has also been the recipient of a number of  teaching awards at the University of Toronto where he is a Professor in the Department of Psychiary.
