Rubber-to-Metal Bonding: Failure Analysis

OVERVIEW
The purpose of this presentation is to address the complex ways in which rubber-to-metal bonded parts fail; the typical causes of these types of failures and what they look like; how H.M. Royal, Inc., evaluates failure in their laboratory; and what can be done to prevent costly failures in the future. The presentation will illustrate how H.M. Royal prepares a bonded test piece; how those test pieces can be evaluated with a customer’s specific elastomer; and how, with our experience, we at H.M. Royal, Inc., are able to evaluate the root cause of individual failure cases, while offering a robust line of RTM adhesives for all applications.


ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Justin Pflug is the Technical Manager and Application Specialist for rubber-to-metal bonding with H.M. Royal, Inc. He received his bachelors of science from Purdue University in his home state of Indiana and has worked 3 years in rubber-to-metal bonding, first in research and development with Dow Automotive and now in technical service in distribution with H.M. Royal.
