Register your high school class for the September UMRS on the Living Lands and Waters Traveling Education Barge!!

The Upper Mississippi River Education Committee is excited to announce its September dates for the High School UMR Symposium! We will hold this bi-annual one-day symposium twice this fall, once on September 27th and again on the 28th in St. Louis, MO. Normally, the UMR Symposium is held each March and October, but this fall we are holding the UMRS early to take advantage of the opportunity for Living Lands and Waters' traveling education barge to be our host location!

This is an exciting opportunity for your high school students to take a class on the education barge and to interact with regional experts on local environmental issues.

Each one-day symposium is designed to allow students to prolem solve real world Mississippi River concerns. In order for the symposium to be successful, teachers provide some background information to their class prior to participation in the UMRS. Background lessons (as power point documents) are provided to the teachers ahead of time. Once the students arrive to the symposium, they will have the necessary information on each of the potential case studies to which they might be assigned for the day. Case studies from past sessions have included Asian Carp, River Sedimentation, Gulf Hypoxia and Floodplain issues. Regional experts for each case study will provide  additional input and support as the students work together with students from another regional school to come up with solutions to their case study. They will then present these solutions to the entire group at the conclusion of the symposium.

We are excited to reach out to new schools this session and to be working with Living Lands and Waters to be able to offer the UMRS Fall sessions on the Traveling Education Barge.

Register your class by Friday, August 3rd, 2012. Classes will be chosen based on a first come, first served basis and proximity to the host location. Each class will be notified by Friday, August 10th, 2012 regarding their acceptance to one of the fall session dates.

We expect more teachers to apply than we can accommodate, so submitting an application form does not guarantee acceptance.

Register Here! Thank you for your interest.

Sincerely,

The UMRS Education Committee
